I don't know anything about Maico's. Except that they go fast, as I witnessed Roy Gay on a Maico have a close race with a guy on a Husky, at the last ever motorcross race at Amaroo Park. Before it got turned into housing.
My question is, what year/size models did Maico come out with the four speed?

490/500  upto 1984 that I know of
Maico MC490 1983
engine numbers
FK 362 .... 4 speed wide ratio
FL 362 .... 4 speed close ratio
D   362 ....5 speed -----------  Sand Spider

Maico SC 500 1984 used the 1983 engines @ same bore and stroke 86.5 x 83 mm
engine numbers start with 364 ....

Maico GM 500 1985 engine starts with  36? .... still used 1983/84 aircooled but also intrduced the  1st watercooled  ( basicly the 1983/84 and 85 air cooled with a pump and jug )
the 1985 liquid cooled engine number starts with 366 ....
1985 Maico sold as Mstar for the American market

All up to and including 1974 had 4 speeds except 125s which I think had 6. Capacities 250, 400 & 440 for the radial fined and 72 and before square barrels 250 & 400 and earlier had 250 & 360. 1975 went to 5 speed and 78 was the narrow case 5 speeds.

What sort of Maico was Roy racing?

I think it was 1998. Couldn't tell you what Maico he road, as I don't know much about them. He had a ding dong battle with some guy on a Husky. I'm fairly sure the Penrith motorcycle club put the event on, and it was for classic/post classic bikes.(I think). Too many schooners have gone through my brain, to remember much more.
P.S. They were open class bikes.
