how to position tank decals on 1978 CR250R
« on: November 23, 2015, 11:31:20 am »
I am having a hell of time trying to find the correct placement of the CR wings on my CR250R tank, tried to copy a picture of a tank from the owners manual and calculate where it should end up ,but still looks out of place, can anyone please give me some idea of where to correctly place these decals, thanks :-\

They are mongrels to get right, they don't follow any particular line of the tank to use as a reference, this is how I done it.

First get some good original pics to use as a reference, have the tank on the bike (near impossible to get right off the bike!) then make sure the bike is sitting level, I had my bike on a workstand then put blocks of wood under the wheels to level it up (or get an assistant to hold the bike), I used the Honda logo on the clutch cover as reference to the bike being level,Get some of the blue low tack masking tape & stick to the top & bottom edge of the decal, then position the decal where you think it should be,you can then stand back & check if its right or needs more tweaking, when you are happy run a strip of the tape on the tank underneath the decal for height reference & mark with a grey lead    where the decal finishes or starts for sideways reference on the tape, remove the decal, peel off part of the bottom & cut a small part of  the backing with scissors, then position the decal where you have marked, stand back & check again that its sweet before peeling off the rest of the backing & sticking down :) :) :) :) :)

Just adding to the good information from Smed, if you spray soapy water (few drops of dishwashing liquid mixed with water in a spray bottle) onto the tank where the stickers are going you can float the stickers into their final position - saves a lot of stress, believe me. I've got my own sticker maker and always put my stickers on this way, as do all the signwriters.

yamaico is correct - just don't over do the soapy water.  Photos about to be on their way.  You can see where the decals need to sit.

cheers

Many Thanks Ross  :), great pics  now I can get work and finally put these stickers where they need to go , appreciate all of your  tips & help folks ,sounds silly but I was going out of my mind trying to get these right . Trying to do the perfect resto with lots of cash expedended ,all this can be brought down by crappy tank decal positioning. :-[
