cleaned rheemed and beamed
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:22:17 pm »
just been in the grip of the medical system with a huuuge melanoma cut off my shoulder (Tassie jokes a plenty) and a routine colonoscopy for bowel cancer. the colonoscopy is not an issue, quite like the time off to relax in the haze of the light switch anaesthetic for 24 hrs but the fasting is a real bastard as well as being chained to the sh*tter once you drink the "cleaner".

luckily picked up the mole changing color and got it in the first cut but had to go back for the safety margin slice up which tested negative so a bit lop sided now.

but the message is clear, keep an eye on those spots and get em checked. ive seen a few mates go down hard with this cancer in the past. particularly in spots they coudnt see or didn't take notice.

Ignore this if you wish as I'm going to ramble on a bit. Exactly what Husky said. I'll throw my two cents in. I have very fair skin and as a doctor once said to me many years ago, "John , you were born in the wrong hemisphere and its only a matter of when not if".

That filled me with a great deal of confidence, but this set me on a path.

This is what I recommend you do.

Find yourself an aggressive doctor who freaks out at every blotch, red mark or mole they come across. I've shopped around a bit and have come across GP's who are more conservative than they should be. Whether this is lack of expertise in this area or not wanting to overreact to every blemish I'm not sure. I had a mate, correction, I have a mate who like Husky , was worried about a mole on his shoulder, GP disregarded this for several years, mate finally gets second opinion, mole has gone troppo, big cut, big scar, big scare. His shoulder is now one huge scar and he's lost strength in it as well. So get a good GP or Skin Doc who has a plan.

Go to a mole/skin clinic and get them to scan your body with a camera, good ones will scan and photo any spots they are concerned about. I walk in to my doc and he has my spots and blemishes up on the screen to check. He has referred to what he needs to do as gardening, sunspots and so forth are like weeds and need to be constantly clipped and dug out. He is aggressive and considering up 95 % of skin cancer is curable with early detection I'll let him slice and dice his little heart out.

I visit the clinic every 6 months, I'm a little paranoid but considering 6 months isn't a long time in an aggressive skin cancers life I think I'm justified. Check yourself and ask the missus to have a look at the bits you cant see. If they're anything like mine then they'll hound the fuk out of you until you do something about whatever they find.

Sorry to ramble but early detection is the key in most cases, not all , but if your not getting checked then you're doing yourself a dis-service.

Yeah that 'Draino' works real good, wonder if it would clean out an expansion chamber as well :o

You should look after yourselves as good as you do your bike.
Some of you should even look after yourselves better than your bike (me) ;D

This.
When the local GP demanded I take my shirt off for a skin check, I felt a little bit like he was perving on my buff body... ( :D ). When the ex-missus' mum pointed out that the mole on my left pec is just like the one that killed her brother, it suddenly became a lot more real.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

it became real when I awoke from the general and stretched ripping out all the final sutures the nice plastic surgeon put in. then I was roughly stitched together by a cursing recovery nurse who kept yelling in my ear to stop moving. I got another burst of local tho which kept it numb for a few more hours. over all tho, the most painful thing has been the removal of sticky bandages. reacted with my skin and its been like a gravel rash for the last week.

im on the 3 month watch list now, getting a good going over (said the bishop to the barmaid) on a regular basis. the surgeons assistant is a 9 / 10 so im there early!

and whilst on the band wagon - all guys our vintage should be getting the bowel cancer check as well - 1 out of 12 will inexplicably get it - and treatment for that is a little worse than a skin cancer removal.

The big C is scary stuff.

The other half was having "back pain" for several weeks before she went to the GP. Got a home bowel test kit and sent it off. There was blood in the poo. Another test at the hospital and it was confirmed that she had cancer of the bowel. An MRI showed an abnormal colon.
The next few weeks were a blur of one specialist after another, blood transfusions and consultations.
From the initial GP check to going in for surgery was 5 weeks. It seemed like everything was happening at once but at the same time, nothing was happening. I think she was stronger than me. All she kept telling the specialists was: "I don't care what you have to do, just get it out"
Thankfully, surgery went well and a 7cm tumor was in her colon so they took the whole colon out.
All the post surgery colonoscopy's have so far been clear and the next one is in 2 years time. So far, so good.
She is only turning 40 on Tuesday!
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.

a close friends daughter just checked out with bowel cancer. she was 32. it wasn't on the gp's radar as she was so young and by the time they figured it out she was history. very sad. but the lesson is there...any exhaust port issue, get the black snake out and check that one off!
