A repair header section is available from musket mufflers here in NZ if you want a lasting fix with fresh metal, they've been around for a long time & have a good reputation. Not sure who would stock them in Oz but if you contact them I'm sure they'll either point you in the right direction or may sell to you direct

I entered myself in the Bathurst round of the Heaven VMX series (Pre-82 250 and All Powers) so I have a little to do once I get home. Mostly just get it sorted and ready to go, it's been sitting for 18 months behind a pallet of urea and a broken Chamberlain in the machinery shed. I bought my brother's XR600 off him just before he moved over to WA, got it registered easily enough so I've been riding that here, there and everywhere.

I have a few things to do, shouldn't take much though. Heavier fork springs, new fork dust wipers, new kicker and countershaft seals, new clutch/brake levers and an upper chain roller are on the way, I just have to fit all that, clean the dirt out of the shittily repaired but not leaking pipe I have, throw it on, make a front number plate out of an old chemical drum or something, sort out green numberplate decals and race numbers and hope I don't hurt myself come race day... I go to work the day after, lol

I'm having issues with cramping hands, and I'm not much more than a rolling roadblock, but it's fun. Which is all that matters, right?

cramping hands can be fixed by consciously relaxing your hands in spots where "grim death " grip isn't required. Its hard to do ...like breathing while jumping...while people tell you they jumped so high they "needed oxygen" its only because they were holding their breath in the run up and the jump

I use spongy grips like the kids have on there scooters,pro grip makes good ones,I love em,I also have large hands and have trouble holding onto a normal grip,the foam seems bigger in your hand.

I worked out that it was standing through the whoops that was killing my hands, I ended up staying seated and just rolling through them in first, found that by doing that I could keep up my admittedly snail-like pace for the whole race rather than having to slow right down and roll everything because I couldn't hold onto the bars.
I'm going to have to look into either lowering the pegs, getting a gripper seat made up or both so I can actually get a grip on the bike with my legs, should help with my hands as I won't have to hang on as tight while I'm standing.

I had four races today, Pre82 all in and 250, the U/45 post classic age race and the single bike entrant race. I was slow, ran dead last all day, got lapped frequently and had an absolute ball doing it. I'll be back

think about where you where slowest...rutted corners is my bet and set up a short practice loop and go round and round for 20 mins or more as often as you can get to it and concentrate on each part of the track until you are happy with how your tackling it each lap...will lift your speed very quickly.,,,practise your starts!

Try to get hold of a set of YZ peg mounts of the same era to try as they are lower, from memory when I still owned my YZ465 there was a shorter guy than me running IT mounts on his YZ to shorten up the distance between seat & peg, he said they were a direct swap
