MX250

Be honest with me guys, am I completely off the pace or are there unexplained aberrations in the market.

I saw a complete but unrestored non-original MX250a on Ebay go for $4000 and thought "you're gotta be kidding". Then I saw a presentable original go for $2500 which I still thought was pretty 'rich' for a pretty oridinary MX'er (but complete arseabout in pricing when compared to the $4000 MX).

But now this

http://www.ddr.net.au/node/718

$5000 for a clean unrestored MX250? Yeah I know it DDR but I don't find his prices outrageous for a commercial cercern. But $5000 for a very oridinary MX'er?

I'm not bad mouthing the MX. I've raced an MX in many disciplines and had faithful service and a shitload of fun on the little beastie. But there not much to recommend them as a collectable is there? Am I missing something?

They are a good "Everyman" starter for VMX, look what I did with just the frame you sold me. I would think a decent original machine might have some collectability to someone who loves them, but from what I have observed most get a sort of retirement to the back of sheds and garages when their owners move up to more exotic or higher performance machines after a season or two and are rarely taken out for competition duties. except as a spare bike. My expectations are not high I just want to be included in the fun, you get a good view of the racing when your chasing from the back of the pack  ;D

Ask if you can take it for a bit of a run ..
if that goes ok, buy buy buy buy..
$5000 is peanuts now and in 15 years time, think of your retirement.
buy buy buy buy.... if owners cars are that clean and neat so are his bikes. :)
Best is in the West !!

I've been wondering the same sort of thing.

Best I can come up with, is that people are paying relatively high prices for an ordinary bike because that ordinary bike promises to be simple to own (reliable, easy to get bits for, etc).

Are we going to have the same conversation about DT Yamahas in another 5 years time??? I fear that we might...
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

well, good old DDR has been the subject of more than one conversation but is it worth $5000?
not till someone hands it over.
half his luck if he can get it and it makes my $290 project worth every cent.

well, it's taken some time but it's finally a go'er!
this is what i've been into for the last several months. getting my $290 MX250 ready for CD6 and the Nats.
funny thing is, i won't be the rider as i've put it all together to get my brothers bum on the seat for the Nats.
gave it a squirt up the street and she's crisp~as 8) just needed to adjust the shifter mechanism a little.
pretty much new/refurbished everything {seat cover still to be fitted}.
i'm stoked! :)

Congrats Vandy, great to see a good example of the old faithful MX back in it's prime, race ready 8).

I'm sure you're up for acres of fun, reliability to tease the Breako boys with, years of faithful service and maybe a few race wins if you are up for it ;) ;D.

May the Sun be on your face, the breeze to your back and the power be with you ;D.

Bought an MX360A from DDR for 5,000 all his bikes imported from States.  Well overpriced seeing as when received motor pulled down by Dean 'Doc' Harrison and oil seals put in wrong way etc (motor rebuild), tyres shot etc, etc, etc.  So cost fortune to get it up to speed.  But wanted to race VMX, so was it worth it.  Every bloody cent.  I would use DDR again, but next time would visit shop and have a look onsite, think that might make a big difference

Bought MX250A of internet for 1000, thanks to Fred Robbins, costs to rebuild etc approx 20000.  Absolutely love it.

So I suppose it comes down to how much you want to ride that sort of machine.  Cost is irrelevant if you want to ride that model

I just sold my  spare MX250a race bike, running etc etc to a forum guy for $2200, i think fair market is about $2-3K depending on Condition,  any thing less is a steal - any thing more would need to be NOS or very original and you be paying the extra cause you wanted all the condition etc for collecting.

Just my 2cents

I got mine as a sort of half built abandoned project for $700, owes me a couple of grand but hell I would want at least....hmmm 10 grand for it.  ::) hell at that price I will even respoke it for you.

I don't think there is anything wrong with people asking the earth, as long as I already own one.

not sure, its is kind of back in the day NOS spare I bought on ebay....but you can have it for $800  ;D

regarding bike values, it costs 5-6 K including purchase to build up most decent VMXers (add up your costs honestly) so a good clean bike is probably worth that....unless it is something quite exotic.
