85' CR250 advice needed - what are they like?

Hi all
I am looking at buying an 85' CR250 to use at some Vinduro's and seeing as i don't know a lot about them I was after a bit of info/advice regarding any specific faults or things to look out for with regard to this particular model. Also what are they like compared to other bikes with regard to power etc.

Rotting of the magnesium waterpump is the biggy, I don't know which models will retro fit  but KDX175 on here makes repo jobs for most models, Rear hubs can give troubles with the bearing mounting surface flogging out,The rear shocks can be costly to rebuild but not unlike most bikes of the era,The rear brake torque arm bearings are usually shot & from memory NLA, otherwise just the usual wear & tear areas most old bikes have, As far as performance goes, pretty much equal to other bikes of the era

I had heard about problems with water pump covers, would be handy to know if replacements are available. Will have to look into it a bit further.
I have rebuilt the rear shock in my 84' XR250R and it wasn't too bad cost wise when you do it yourself so if the CR one is similar it shouldn't be too bad.
As for the rear wheels do you know if they are interchangeable with the same year XR250R? I realize the brake plate is different but are the hubs the same?

No, the XR wheel has a smaller diameter brake hub

i have never ridden the 85' but i have owned an 86 for nearly 30 years, it has a great motor and i used it as a trail bike for many years, & did enduro's on it. they handle great, have a rear drum brake but it works. I love this bike, i even had 2 of them at for many years.

No, the XR wheel has a smaller diameter brake hub

Thats a bummer as i have a spare set of XR wheels.

I Have an 84, which is a great bike. Fantastic power, handles well once the suspension is sorted, and a quality build, as Hondas are. I am fairly sure you can get a replacement clutch cover for $400 plus shipping from Russel on this forum,(just search clutch cover) so just factor that in, replace it as soon as you get the bike and avoid the pain many of us went through.

Currently not running and needs some work but I am really looking forward to getting it up and running and taking it for a spin. Hopefully I might have it ready for the VTR Vinduro at Yass.

I've got an 1985 too and it seems good water pump cover probs are well known mines fine so far heaven number 409 pictures on the redhead group.
