72-73 XL 250 for Pre 75 Class
« on: July 17, 2008, 10:29:30 pm »
Hi all,
OK, so I want to get back into dirt riding and have the wise (make that nostalgic?) idea of buying an old XL 250 Motosport. Plan is to keep all the road running gear and tank for a rainy day, and work the rest of it over for racing.
Q: Is this a lame idea and should I go find an Elsinore instead? Been to some of the local meetings (Tassie) and the big bore XL 350's do pretty good for themselves. Any reason why the 250 can't.

Any and all ideas welcome.

They make fine race bikes. Fit a 350 swingarm (1" longer), a decent pipe, a decent set of shocks and a little fork fiddling and you'll have fun all day. If you're serious, you can hot the engine to your heart and wallets content but if you just want to have fun, keep it stock.

So which one makes the better motocross race bike, the 250 or 350? When i was in juniors there was a local A grader who was pretty quick on a hot XL250. Is the 350 a better thing or are they too heavy?

Either ;) Remember side port only for the 350, and the 250cc love the (still about NOS) 305cc kits. Also find if possible a electronic ignition. Cheers and enjoy Tim.
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

i think the 250 is better 8)
they rev harder which is what you want
i have been racing mine for about
8 years now and they are a lot of fun
specially when you beat souped up 350s
or bsa or ccms :o
i know some guys who have gone away from stroking 350s
they are going back to a shorter rod for more revs
bit like a modern bike if you have seen inside ;D
