It's a no reed valve 5 port traily, well was. Nice early model score ;)

(and you can polish the cases to the shiny mirror look shown in brochure.)

Engine number dt1f     seems to cover a few different models,
but I think with the 186 you may be on the right track
according to this

OK the DT1F # was used for all the DT 's after reeds where used so this Number started in 1972 then was used with the same prefex right up to 1974 when the longer case motor was used in the dt250's . so just because the prefex is DT1F does not make it a DT2MX . The DT2MX from 1972 had a different frame to the DT. Iain .

Not sure if this helps or confuses the issue but according to this link the DT2MX starts at DT1F-185101 [if i'm reading it right] but not sure if that means frame or motor. Being yamaha the numbers 'should' be the same on both anyway. I had one brand new out of the box [good days those lol], & boss had an RT2MX. After that he got an SC500 & me the MX250--was never sure if that was a good move as loved the DT & got 'bucked off' [& F@@##d off with] the MX but 'had to have' the latest model every year regardless eh!!. Pic of your mates bike would sort it!!. Cheers.

I always thought that the DT1F numbers started with the round swingarm models in 1970. Had an Orange tank DT1 when I was a kid and pretty sure it had DT1F on the engine and frame. Sure does confuse a lot of people now, had a guy turn up the other day with an RT2 that he thought was RT1 because the he bought it as an RT1 project bike. The read valve and the 19" front wheel told the story.

hi , on the subject of  the some what confusing early yamaha DT engine and frame numbers.   in the early 80's the local yam dealer gave me an 8 page list of 100's of old yam codes, eng and frame numbers- the numbers are' almost' identical to the ones quoted on yamahaenduro.com (US yam forum) and on the cyclerestorer.com site.  as the owner of 13  DT1/2/3's and a shitload of early dt stuff . have a fair interest in the details.
                       68 DT1 -   eng and frame numbers    DT1  00101 to  14090                   69 DT1 B  -  DT1  15001  to   42520
                        69DT1 S -    DT1S   90101    to    91573                                                    70 DT1 C -    DT1  50101   to   66389
                       70 DT1MX  -    DT1  95101  to  97218
   1971  DT1 E  -    DT1F     00101  to   03942 (with close ratio box)     and      DT1F    020101    to    ? /   032101    to   ?
   1971 DT1MX  -   DT1F   090101   to    093684
   1972   DT2   -   DT1F    105101    to     134257                             72 DT2MX -    DT1F    185101  to   195339
   1973   DT3 -    DT1F   135101     to    165633                                73  MX250 -    364    000101  to    011040
happy to be corrected/abused/ridiculed.     cheers g.

kicking myself [now] as dumped my DT1 square tube swing/arm frame about 20 years ago as was getting prone to cracking & got sick of welding it--'now i want it back', still got the original steel slider forks but using an RT2 frame [i think] RT1 number lol. Yamaha right confused the issue--as have an AT1 [piston port] but you see it often on 'trademe' selling an AT2/3 as an AT1. In the words of Mr Know-it-all, Yamaha, 'you realy should have known' [better]. Probably saving on number punches!!.
