Hi

(New at this game so be gentle with me.)

Just wondering what gearbox oil I should be using in my newly aquired Suzuki TM 125

Probably half use ATF  and half have there favourite brand.ATF also good for clutch plate IMO

SAE 20W 40 multigrade non friction modified motor oil

550 Mls

650Mls on a clean dry box

Im with Pokey - ATF made my clutch slip - weird ços that's what I used back in 74 with my TM but just couldn't make it work 30 years later - must be a new brew these days

if you use ATF it must be the ATF-F type, the old ford borg warner oil.

take no notice of me--but--on my DT1 back in "68/69 i'd broken one of the bigger gears that looked a bit spindly on the fist models with coarse teeth compared to "70 [DT1F--on], anyway went out through the bottom, hell of a mess & couldn't just pull more cases & gears out from under the bench like nowdays, so, after fixing i thought bugger it i'll run EP90 dif oil & worked 'good as', only noticeable thing to put up with was cold starts into gear it hung on a bit till oil warmed up, had a GYT Kit on & clutch never looked like slipping. Pretty sure my old 350 Matchy from the "40's [later swing arm bolted on] had a mixture of grease & diff oil mixed up as std recommended lube in the gearbox. Anyway, all something about nothing. I just use cheapy 20/40 in everything nowdays.

a lot of the husky guys in the us run a "tractor fluid" which is some kind of PTO (atf type oil I think). its cheap as and causes no dramas.

don't get caught paying for "light wt gearbox oil specifically for bikes" when you can get the atf or briggs and Stratton 20 wt oil for much cheaper.

last time I bought ATF-F from a car joint was ~$5 bucks a litre. I use it in the husky 400 and the 010 kato 300 with no worries.

use cheap valvoline 20/50 ( $15 for 4 litres at supercheap at the moment ) in my rmx250 and (now sold) rm125n. Absolutely no problems
and so cheap, you can change it every 3rd or 4th ride.
