Parts from the UK
« on: December 18, 2014, 04:57:03 pm »
Does anybody on the forum have any ideas on reasonably priced methods of shipping parts from the UK to Australia?

I have bought a set of front forks in the UK, and need to ship them to me.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Friends over there (maybe someone on this very forum may help?) package forks as small a parcel as you can , (drain all oil , remove springs, then collapse) off to the Post Office.
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

l bought a fuel tank in the UK from DK offroad and delivery cost 60 pound through a courier (they organised) door to door in a well oversized box and delivered in only 6 days.

l think the Mail service may not be the cheapest option.

If you  know the size & weight of the parcel your parts would be in,
you could look on one of the UK courier price comparison websites like -Parcelmonkey.co.uk {there are lots of others}
If you find a good deal on there , then see if the sender of your forks will use the courier mentioned.
Royal Mail{ and Parcelforce} is often the most expensive  , but is the most convenient for sender - you just go in your local Post Office.
hope this helps

20 months ago ,set of  modified 125cc forks that had been packed as above ,from Pommieland to me cost 22pound via post with insurance. Seemed  pretty fair.

22 pounds?  Fair?  Bloody bargain I would say.  Can cost me that much to post within the UK, never mind to the other side of the planet.

Interparcel is a good search engine that will list all the options with named couriers.

Parcelforce is ok.  I have an account with them and the discount is pretty good, never the less I would still expect it to be 60 pounds + to post a set of forks to Oz.

Hope that helps....

Thanks for the ideas so far. I will follow them up.
UK Royal Mail has quoted 160 pounds to ship this parcel.
Forks are a leading link set, and cannot be dismantled.

I have found a company called "Parcel Monkey" who will ship my parts, UK to Australia, for about 90 pounds.
Any body used them? Are they reliable?

Thanks,

I have used them a couple of times & had no problems , but like any couriers you have to take a chance .
Tracking & some Insurance is a good idea.
In my own experience these days problems with postage are rare , although you do hear of certain dodgy Countries you should avoid dealing with.
The only 100% problem free - guaranteed method is fly to the UK , put them in your suitcase and fly back.
Good luck with the forks

I had some forks sent a few months back. I have been told pretty much anything these days over 600mm long has to go via couriers and cant go by regular royal mail/parcel force so that ment even a set of bars had to be sent by courier to me aswell and Royal mail will not send parcels that size anymore.  The postage rates changed this year. The forks were sent by various couriers within the UK but by the time they got here they were delivered by DHL. Took about 5 days and i was charged about 80 pounds from memory but there was no way to know if i paid too much or no enough. I was not in a position to negotiate as the seller would only send them this way and i was desperate for the forks as they are not available on models outside europe so i just had to pay what they wanted to ship them.
r
I have had stuff sent by parcel monkey too. No problems. It usually gets transferred over to DHL or StarTrack once it arrives in Australia though.

I think the forks i got from UK were initially sent off with 'Parcel2go.com'
