1984 KX500 Engine question...

Gday guys...
I am building this KX500 - from a bucket of bits ...
And I can't for the life of me figure out what exactly fits into the threaded hole I am pointing to with the scribe in this pic....
And of course I dont have any parts left over that could go there.........



Do any of you KX'perts have the answer for me please?
I just cant see anything on the parts diagrams anywhere......

Help !

Isn't the internal forward "shift rod" that the forward "shift fork" slides on directly behind that hole?
Can you see the end of the shift rod through that hole?
Is the bore of the hole threaded or plain drilled?

Where you are holding your scriber,,,,is that outer end surface just still plain cast surface finish or has it been machined

It may be there for assemble use at the factory.

Just realised my 500th post was regarding a 500... ironically...   :o

Okay - Nath.... I did say I have checked the parts manuals mate. I cant see it anywhere in them !

Mick D - to answer your Q's...
No you cant see the shift fork rod through that hole.
The bore of that hole is threaded.
The outer surface is plain cast........

I am no closer..... but thankyou for the questions.....  :-\

Does anyone know? surely someone that has an 84KX500 engine must know.  :(

Bikebandit has the wrong diagram there for the 1984 KX500. That picture shows the 1983 KX500 setup. I know because I actually have both.  :)

I like your input though smed and appreciate anyone trying to help me here.....

And no it isnt plate 13169 as that is fitted on the inside of the case to hold the shift drum in place.....

I wonder if it's for a crank [pushing out] puller--if makes sense. Pic is of a KX500 so it says. If it was yamaha they generaly have two 8mm threaded holes opposite each other but i suppose why not have 3 holes of 6mm--if there's anywhere on the right side to screw the other two legs. Hope these links work to copy n paste--don't realy know what i'm doing.

actualy they look more like 8mm bolts but would have thought 6mm threads for the mag cover holes so--i dunno.

If it were intended that anything was to be screwed flat to it, it would be machined flat instead of left as cast.
No parts list views or indexes show anything as missing from there.

Pictures instead of the real thing, slight disadvantage,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It still looks to me that the end of the forward shift rod is directly behind that Threaded hole?? ??


If the threaded hole were to be perfectly over the end of the forward shift rod?? it would be the perfect place to wind in a "jacking screw" as a facility to separate the center cases.

It would be nice to have closure, but I ouldn't worry too much about it Hardo,,

I see in the case of the "rear" shift rod, that its mounting bore has a smaller dia hole all the way through,,
nice access for a pin punch if it were needed?


Anyhow have a great weekend, I am going motorbike riding :D
