Intro Tarren DR250 Resto

New Member - Hi.

Embarking on a resto of a DR250s.

Perhaps someone can assist.

Upon picking up the bike a went for a ride to test the gears clutch etc.  All fine and great to take for a ride.  Works on a kick start only.

On getting into garage completed a oil change and new filter.  Now won't fire.  I got it to turn over and left my foot down on the kick starter.  Did this do some damage?  How do i investigate?  Clues would be great.

What year DR250s? if it's between 82-89 then they have a propensity to blow stators but in an intermittant way, check your plug against the head and check spark when kicking over.

Yes - 82-89.  Thanks will check.  Think i'll replace plug strait away.

Do you have any recommendations where to attain spares>  Located in Sydney at present.

Side covers are the biggest issue as far as finding spares go, there is a trick to safe removal and fitting "Pull the bottom tab out until it just pops out then the rear tab until it just pops out and then gently pull down the tab that goes into the petrol tank" do the reverse when fitting them back on. If your bike is the "S" model and has the steel swingarm you can bolt in the aluminium arm and shock from the "Z" model to get an extra 3" of rear wheel travel plus swap the front end to the "Z" as well. WEBB cams offer a replacement that has a better profile plus fit a 34mm pumper carb from a GN300 (They pop up on ebay every once in a while) they bolt straight on. You can bore out to 300cc also for a bit more oomph. Engine parts are shared between GN250/TU250/LT250F

You local dealer should have a plug. Or just try ebay i guess but it would cost more. Not only will the Z swing arm and forks fit the D, E, F etc will too. F will be disc though. There are 2 types of disc front end too. The 1985 'SF' and the 1985 'F'  The F model is 36mm and will require matching triple clamps and is found mainly in USA and is longer travel, and the SF is 35mm but can be found in Australia easier. The easiest way to tell difference is to look at the fork underhang below axle. USA F model has several inches of fork extending below the axle and they look much like PE forks but with a disc and the SF has the axle right at the bottom of the fork.

leaving the foot down on the starter should not damage anything. old Suzuki's have a habit of electrical problems. Othert things with old bikes are stale petrol. it goes off and is no good after 3 - 6 months. also old bikes can have the air filter collapse and block the carby.

check the spark by laying the plug against the head and attaching the plug lead and kicking it over see if it is a consistant and strong spark.

put in a new plug and check again. if the spark is poor and intermittent or not present, you may have a dud cdi box. check all the connections as old bikes can get corrosion in the connectors and the earth points. if all the ancilliary bits look all right, send the box off for testing by a good auto elec  who does bikes....

hopefully its just stale fuel.... ;)
