Springs for 40mm forks
« on: April 06, 2014, 09:03:10 am »
Does anyone have a source for some heavier fork springs (probably around 0.46) to suit Husky 40mm forks ? From memory the dimensions required are 33mm O.D and around 500mm long, but I will pull my forks apart soon and double check. I have used other springs in the past, but had trouble finding 33mm OD and the springs I used seemed too loose inside the fork tubes and rattled around.

I think Race Tech have some on their website. I have successfully cut my springs down by about 6 inches and fitted a spacer. That increases the spring rate. Just calculate it so they don't coil bind at full travel :o

I checked the length of my springs and they are 650mm long, which is shorter than standard and require a spacer as you say . I had to get a longer spacer this time , because I think the springs have been sacked out from the bike being tied down in the back of my ute for too long .

Could put a top out spring in that would stiffen them . I got a husky a few years ago with really stiff front end ,when I pulled them apart they had 50mls long top out springs in them.

Adding a top out spring will soften the overall rate. No matter how stiff the top out spring is, two springs in series will always soften the overall rate. Only way to stiffen existing spring is to cut material off it.(shorten it) Better just to buy a new spring.

Then why were my forks so stiff until I put it back to standard.

I used to think the same. Look up springs in series. Maybe they were coil binding, which will stiffen it up real quick.

Your top out springs were probably simply acting as a 50mm spacer. Preloading the long spring and making them stiff to move. Not what you want.

Preloading doesn't change the spring rate  It just makes the spring insensitive to the initial loads until they start moving. Then they behave just like a soft spring at higher compression or travel.  You must select the correct spring rate for your weight / speed. Preload is fine tune only. It doesn't correct for the wrong spring rate.
