XT500motor

What would be a fair price to pay for a complete unrestored XT500 motor and supposedly a runner?

$500.00 would be fair ,  whats it like on the inside could be good or bad that's the risk , when they say it was a runner how long ago ???

Remember that the last year for the XT500 was 1981, making the engine at least 33 years old.  As Mick25 has said $500 is a fair price, but you will find that they often go for a hell of a lot more than that.

"Running" as a description does not necessarily mean the engine is a good one as these engine will stand a whole lot of abuse and will still run when that are totally knackered.

Why do things the easy way, when with a bit of effort you can really make it difficult for yourself!!

get him to take the maggie cover off and see if theres play in the crank bearing, good chance there will be. the other easy test is buy a torch globe of about 4 or 5volts and use an old mobil phone charger to power it up or some batteries but its good to put in the plug hole and see how the bore looks ,if u see fine scratch marks going up and down the bore its been dusted and so has the bottom end/cam etc as running in the same oil as the oil filter blocks up fast under those conditions but as others had said exspect most 500's to be worn out and need at least a  top end or full motor rebuild.

That's interesting .. I recently advertise no less than 2 TT500 motors and an XT500 motor for $250 each and only managed to sell the XT motor to Stuart so he can pull it apart for the crank ......

Obviously I was too cheap.  No matter .. will keep them now anyway.

i got a h model xt motor minus the maggie and clutch cover off the dump shop for $15 ten yrs ago, upon dismantling it I found it had holed the piston and the rod had got hot as well but everything else to be in good condition so not too many dollars to get it going like new and plenty of cheap parts on ebay for them as well ;)
