77-79 yz 250 fuel tank differences
« on: March 18, 2014, 10:38:29 pm »
Hi Guys,

I'm restoring my 1979 YZ250F... seems to be plenty of 77-78 repo fuel tanks around, but no 79 model tanks, I haven't seen them side by side, but look very similar, and look like the 77-78 would fit on the 79 model,

What are the differences?... capacity?... seems like an odd model for tanks  :-[

Thanks again guy's

Regards
Dave

Short answer Yes & No.

The F has sharper lines & the lower mounts are further forward than the D/E. You could make up brackets for a D/E tank to work if need be.

YZ250/400F are the same. You'll get a USA one easy enough.

I think I have a spare white one that would need some elbow grease to get to show condition (They all do) but ready to bolt on for racing. You can buy tank decal sets that cover the whole tank that would disguise it well enough. What sort of money you looking to spend? Perko 0427334186

Hi Viper,

Yes, your correct, at a second look last night at a bunch of pics I could see the mount differences, being further back on the d-e models.. plus the front of the tank has longer straighter edge. plus the bottom back corner is different

I have considered a tank cover, as I have seen on a 250F, it seems spruces it up ok, and the decals stick, my concern with the older original tank is once it's had some elbow grease spent on it, the decals still my not stick, but that seems to happen on most,

Let me know what your  after for the tank,...

Regards
Dave

I'm on it,

I like the idea of the skin for the tank, the rest of the bike has new plastics, so the tank skin will clean it up to finish it off instead of the creamy off white look the tank has now

Thanks again for your help !

So you have a tank?

Shoved it in the dishwasher (Dont tell the wife). Scrape off yellow residue with a razor blade, sand with various grades of paper finishing with 600 or 800 wet & dry (Wet soapy water) & then steel wool & paint thinners.

There are lots off threads on this, one now http://forum.ozvmx.com/index.php?topic=33808.0

Do some searching.
