The starting price is arrr  up there :o  YZ80B were a "game changer" but not so the A model, though they do look smick!

The A was the first YZ, it's always going to be collectible.
The B model is just an A with different top end, pipe and carby.

I think it's kinda odd they fetch 3k or more , you nearly better off with an 80 than a full size bike for just collection reason's

It would be interesting to me to know how the owner came up with that opening bid amount. No disrespect, but for that amount I think the bike should have NOS parts all over the place along with a high level of restoration. Maybe there aren't many in Australia so it's a rarity thing? They're pretty common in the U.S.

I've seen YZ80A's go for over 5K, this one is a bit ordinary in the quality of restoration IMO.....mostly a "rattle can" resto. YZA's are the most collectable of any VMX bike as a series...80/125/250/360.......the only bike that seems to pull more money than a 360A is a CCM.

Only a hot rod XR could out drag a B model, a stock XR was about on a par with an A

My rose cloured classes say it was the D model that a big step up power wise, saying that thou when I owed a shed of these 10 years ago I didnt notice much between the C/D models only the pipe was different on the outside. The F model was the next big step with 6 speed and alot more power. I rode a new one back in day and was imprssed by its power but by then I moved on to big bikes.

I had the hot XR - Bert Kingston kit and Bassani pipe - and was competitive with the B's - could never see anything but the back end of the C though - even put a downpayment on buying a C - they were miles in front of a B - and had the "hot" lay down suspension  ;D  D's weren't as much of an improvement over the C's as the C's were over the B's.

JohnnyO you have stated my recollections precisely.  A model lovely to look at, not much go. B model ,now that's got the little bugger going! C model more go again! and trying now to improve the suspension /handling set ups.
Stock XR75 lovely to look at not much go. great fun bike!   Spend shit load money* on modifying XR75 and yep they could preform somewhat better, but..... Just to race just buy the B or C model Yammie ;)

* Spend a shit load of the parents money if you were lucky ;)

col doohan was a honda dealer
he spent mega dollars on scotts xr75
my yz80c  beat it
col bought scott an rm80b
the rm80 was miles in front of the yz
