Allan "Pierre" Robinson is a good bastard, who rides pretty bloody well.
I ended up servicing for him at Condo this year, when he and his mate Clunk turned up without a service crew. I am assured that he has his shit in much more of a pile for the Dakar...

Just watched Day 1 on SBS On Demand. On the web and also an app for iPad. As usual a very brief look at the bikes and you only get to see the top 5 riders featured.  Better than nothing and those guys have big kahunas. Off to the Dakar website to see which Aussies are riding this year.

Ben Grabham is 11th 4 minutes behind the leader Barreda on a Honda. Usual suspects Coma and Depres in 2nd and 3rd. Sherco's running 4th and 7th. First Husky (Speedbrain) is 10th. 172 riders still in the race. Last guy 3 h 55.m behind the leader.

I watch the Dakar every year on SBS and can't help but think that it would be possible to make at least 7 one hour shows a day each dedicated to a specific subject or class.
Could even do a 1/2 hr one on the spectators as they look like an interesting bunch.

Word has it that Robbo finished yesterday in 34th, and was fastest Aussie. Silly mad bastard.

The silly bugger rides well, but this is well beyond what I expected from him!

Ben Grabham is out, as is fellow Aussie Mark Davidson. British wonder kid Sam Sunderland has also dropped out.

Damn shame really as Grabham and Sunderland had performed well.

Marc Coma (Spain/KTM) has won the bike section with Jordi Villadoms (Spain/KTM) second and Olivier Pain (France/Yamaha) third.

Last year's winner Cyril Despres (France/Yamaha) was just outside the top three in fourth.

Three out of six Aussies managed to make it home: Troy O'Connor, Shane Diener and Allan Roberts came in at positions 37, 38 & 39 respectively. Pretty good effort seeing as half the field didn't complete what has been described as one of the toughest Dakar Rallies ever.

I was really hoping to see a make other than KTM take out the top honour but it wasn't to be. Maybe next year...

I was working with Allan Roberts before Xmas, he told me the time and money it cost him, just to get there. All he wanted to to do is finish. What an amazing effort to all the Australians.
