Husky waterpumps..
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:49:45 am »
I'm looking at buying a 1987/8 xc 430 sight unseen and was curious to know if Husky still used Magnesium in their clutch/waterpump cover then.
Seller tells me it "seems o.k.", but stops short of guaranteeing it.

87 very likely to be mag. They changed to alloy sometime during 88.  You can buy replica replacements from HVA Factory in UK but quite pricey.

If it holds water without anything coming out the week hole then that's a good sign. You can always machine the seal hole and fit a larger OD seal if it is corroded. I have done this. Ask the seller to take the water pump cover off (3 Allen screws) and take a photo for you. Will need to drain the coolant obviously. I run waterless coolant in my mag 87 510 to prolong the life of the mag barrel. Have replaced the clutch cover with an alloy version.

Depending on price it's probably not a big deal so go for it!

That's what I thought, it's going to end up about $3k including freight. Seems in decent condition otherwise...
