Ive seen some photo's of some guy with over 20 Vincents. But he had a part time guy caring for them.
One thing I have noticed with large VMX collections is the neglect of bikes. If you think you can actually look after 50 + bikes your in denial. Just do the math if your 50+ and have another 20 bikes waiting for restro you will die before it happens. Or you need to be very rich and pay for someone to do most of the work.

Spot on.

My bikes live under sheets in an enclosed shed in a dry climate, but they still require care and attention to maintain them, even if they don't get used.

My collection is about half the size it was (and all of the larger projects have been sold off), but there's still hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get all of the bikes where I want them...

I love tinkering with bikes, and I particularly love bringing them back from the dead - but it's all too easy to bury yourself in them.

To answer the original question, I reckon that five or more actively used race bikes is a large collection.
Ten or more nice bikes that are shed queens/lightly used is a large collection.
But thirty shitbox "gunna" projects that sit in the shed untouched doesn't really count as a large collection...

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

That's a bizarrely silly money pit unless he is independently wealthy, owns a museum and has a staff to restore and maintain them, otherwise it's a private wrecking yard with no customers.

In the past I've owned 12 going Maicos at the one time, all restored or at least in race condition but I got a bit bored with the one brand fixation. I've now got two running Maicos and three project Maicos soon for resto...all very rare models. Like Nathan, I love to tinker with old bikes, and now that I'm a long way past any serious racing, the resurrection (or creation) of old bikes is my hobby. I love building one off hot rod and/or aftermarket framed bikes which sees me now accumulating a collection of aftermarket frames and parts to eventually build into complete bikes as I get the urge. I once built about three bikes a year but I've slowed down a lot since I got sick and they now take as long as they take. I have no set plans to own any particular number or type of bikes, I just keep what I'm comfortable with and pass on those I've either lost interest in or don't fit into my scheme. I've recently sold three bikes and a couple of frames and more will move out in the near future. If I do have a 'plan' it's to have three or four dirt trackers that I can still potentially ride and two or three motocrossers on a rough sort of rotation....as one gets built, another gets sold. That's the plan anyway ::).

now that lot would drive me insane, too many, you'd have to be seriously RICH to even contemplate that lot!  Imagine insuring them for starters, the amount of sleep you'd loose over possible theft, the agitation over the fact you'd NEVER have time to ride and for sure not ride any of those, any more than a half dozen of one type is the limit I reckon, 6 of one brand, then if you have more than one lot of six you are a collector for sure...OF DUST!
