1985 MX photos...29 yrs ago...ouch!
« on: December 27, 2013, 11:45:39 am »

Don't ask me how to ride a bike or change a gear. I have sat on a couple but never ridden one. My adrenalin rush came from taking photos of the guys/gals racing them up close and personal.

This is the old track at Southern Cross, In the goldfields WA. The steep sections were known as the 'Slime Dumps', formed from tailings from nearby mines.
The event attracted overseas and international riders who competed for gold bullion. The race is still run each year at a newer track nearby.

Spot on Red Alert. King of the Cross was always held shortly after the Manji 15000 when most of the top riders were still in WA. The guy with the Arab headdress (Keffiyeh) is Bob Cousins, organiser of the meet and head honcho behind the bar in his pub in Southern Cross. Many a tale was told around the fire on Saturday night in the track car park and generally those tales got wilder as the ale soaked in.

wow great shots there. nice choice of Bikes too by the way.  your a big bloke you make the 500's look small under you.

do you really think the 85' RF is evil, and the 86' RG was Placid ?  ???

Ahh Jilliby, what a great track.

The only evil bike there was the 480....cantankerous bloody things they were.

The 500RF and 500RG were (and are) great open class MX'ers....it was all down to the man controlling the right hand  ;D
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.

Glad you liked them,
The 480rc was crap the 480RD was fine, the 500RF was probably the most powerful of all the 500 CR's and I have had all but the 450 at some time in the past.
the RG allowed you move around better due to the better ergo's better tank shape, so yes the RF was evil in it hit too hard and was a bit of a ergo nightmare even for someone 190cm and 100kg. I raced it for a season but kept the RG for 3 seasons until the 88 model came out which I modified quite a bit as it was a little slow then I got the 91 model modified it and raced it only local tracks like lakes and Cessnock for several years as they stopped updating them, then I went service Honda. So yes I was a die hard CR500 person and yes I twisted the throttle all the way, I will post a few shots were you can see my middle finger fanning the clutch to get even more out of them in turns. Once I find them :)

What ever happened to Synlube?  I loved their water-washable airfilter oil.
