How much better are the cartridge forks on the 86 cr250 compared to the non-cartridge povvo forks honda put on the 125 that year?

So I've read, just wondering whether it's worth the trouble/expense of upgrading the 125 forks given my riding ability ;D

for what its worth Mainy i upgraded the forks on my 85' 500 to the 86' 250 forks with heavier springs, it was a good upgrade i reckon. there is a forum member selling some..... i reckon get onto it. suspension is the best thing to do for old bikes and bodies.

they are the same. I'm sure the forks are externally identical.
Just watch out for the rust. Don't wake that shit up  ;)

So is there any way to pick them externally (ie. without pulling them apart) ? I want to make sure the forks aren't the 250 items already

The 250 have either Showa cast into the inside of the lower leg, or a sticker.
The 125's where KYB.
or you can just unscrew your fork cap, if you have a cartridge rod attached to it, you know it's a showa fork already.
