Does anyone have a racer '74 TM400 for sale?
« on: October 29, 2013, 02:15:57 am »
I'm thinking I'd like to buy a '74 TM400 and turn it into an RN look-alike, just for my own wank value.  I really want to see if they are as bad as their reputation  ;-)

John the 74 TM 400 is IMHO not a bad bike ,it's the early models that had the bad rep  ;)

They were all bad in the 70's
Decent shocks fixed them by the 80's
Real good shocks made them great by the 00's
Now we are in our later 50's they are hard work again
Kids think they are soft.

Looks like you've got the bike building bug John.... :D A pre75 bike would be great among that fleet of long travel bikes you have. I reckon if you contact Dave#6 on here, he will more than likely know where there is one, or will find you one. The man has an incredible knack when it comes to finding VMXers....

My Boyd and Stellings framed TM400 is for sale for the right money. It's currently partially dismantled after a failed attempt at getting it up and running for the Nats but I'll put it back together for the buyer. This is the perfect starter for an RN project as we compared it to Dave Tanners RN74 at CD9 and my bike was noticeably lighter. This bike is arguably the trickest bike in Aussie VMX (even though I've never raced it)  I'm only selling it because It doesn't fit in with my change in direction.  PM me for more details.

Adjustable steering head angle??
The steering head angle is fully adjustable, ultra light chro-mo frame, alloy swingarm, YZ-A forks, YSS shocks, aftermarket plastic Maico airbox, DC opaque YZ125D side panels and TM125 mudguards, Pacifico TM250 replica tank,  Yamaha 125 seat, RL trials bike rear wheel, trick ignition, oil pump and slinger removed, brand new 36mm Mikuni, magura levers and throttle, all new cables. With the right rider and some further development this bike has the potential to destroy the pre 75/500 class. A spare motor comes with it.

I'm not sure Paul, it was in the bike when I got it. Someone told me it's the same casting as an RH74 only in aluminium instead of magnesium but I can't say for sure.

The RL hub is the same as fitted to RM 125 M,S,A and B models plus later TS 125 and 185 models .

Its an upgrade for a TM 125 as it does away with the cush drive . Its the RL connection that makes it pre 75 legal .

Its a light and fairly strong hub , way lighter than the TM /TS rear hub and lighter than the RH 250 / RM 250A magnesium hub.

Its also physically smaller than the RH /RM hub, i have used one on a TM 250 and will probably fit one to my 74 KX250 for racing as they save a lot of unsprung weight .
