Selector Fork Wear
« on: June 01, 2008, 02:23:18 pm »
Looking for some guidance here.....I have noticed that my 1982 430 XC engine gear selector forks have worn as shown in the attached photos.  One side of the fork seems to have a weld deposit build up which I assume to be a hard facing wear resistant material.  On the other side this weld deposit seems to have worn off and the fork is wearing where it rubs against the gear.  I imagine the fork is reasonably soft compared to the weld deposit (or whatever it is).  Is this normal or do these forks need be replaced?  I wonder if this wear is the source of the metal particles I find in the oil when I change it.

the built up side is the side that selects gears
you may need to replace them :(
if you cant get any you can build them up with weld and
machine down to right thickness 8)
check your gear dogs on that fork for wear on dogs or slots
unusual for back of shift fork to wear
check for bearing play on shafts or bush play on gears ;D
follow me to first turn

Thanks HSB....you wouldnt happen to know what to weld them up with would you?  What weld material to use. I assume its something that wears well but doesnt damage the gear.  Cheers
