Painting the Montesa Logo.
« on: May 30, 2008, 02:05:53 pm »
Has anyone got any tips on re-painting the inlaid 'Montesa' name on the fibreglass tanks?

I'm repairing one and was wondering any tips for best results? Hand paint by brush or mask up and spray?

One way to do it would be to after spraying the tank red, use an airbrush and spray into the inset
letters and then lightly wet sand the overspray, then shoot clear over the whole tank.
Originally, the lettering was hand painted over the gelcoat and then the whole tank cleared.

Thats an idea; I'm been thinking about doing/learning a little airbrushing and I saw an airbrushing kit for about $40 down at the Autoshop the other day. Just noted it; didn't pick it up and suss it for quality or anything. Now ya got me thinking  ;D.

Thanks guys. It's always worth the ask an'it  8).

Just repainted my VB tank, got the original paint matched, but ended up a bit too orange, have to do for a while though.  What is the correct colour for the tank & for the lettering(looks like a pearl colour, but may be just faded), and where do you get it?

The lettering on my tank is a dark gold. It is what i would consider as a pretty standard gold paint with that metal flake look which might be what you describe as 'pearl'.

I won't fuss too much, there's only a handfull of Monties out there for your bike to be compared to and Monty owners are so please to see a fellow sufferer they won't give you a hard time  ;D.

'Montesa Police' is an oxymoron  ;D

I'm fooling the system by posting twice - this file is 112kb and the system only allows 128kb but rejected.

Graeme do you know what the name of the Red you used? as i still need to paint the on the VR. I've got a sign writer(old school mate)lined up to do the "MONTESA" freehand with a brush .

None of those pixies are mine  ::) worst luck  :P. I've pinched a few from the internet, typically ebay, and keep as a reference to help in the resto. I'm currently in the process of painting mine, rub down and spray putty stage. I'm not gonna fuss too much, I'll look around for a car colour that approximates and away I'll go   8).

Mine is intended as a 'close to original' presentable period race bike rather than a showroom NOS resto or an over-blinged childhood wet dream ;).

Code 75 1978
Red Lucite Acrylic Lacquer (Dupont)
---------------------------------
PPG Delstar Acrylic Enamel
DAR 72155  SC
Fleet Bright Red
--------------------------------
Either of these two colours look correct.

I would suggest using the lacquer, wet sanding, doing the letters and
then clear coating.
