40th anniversary mr mx 1974 to 2014
« on: October 08, 2013, 08:33:32 pm »
Gidday all, how good would it be for Australian (mr) motocross in 2014 to have a similar format as 1974 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the mr mx program? Let's get the mx scene back on track as it was in the early days: huge crowds, proper tv, and event promotions, eg past riders at Myers signing autographs etc.  And what about legends racing old bikes for fun on the day? The current mx nationals is going backwards. Promoters could adapt the original format +  lower the costs for riders and spectators to get the numbers back, and have a red hot go of promoting the future of our sport and our past champions. We have the bikes amongst us and I'm sure we would be willing to see the old boys on them even if they were just cruising around. Give me your thoughts, Bear

Where 1 step ahead of you Bear, up here in Bananaland we are holding the first Post Classic Australian Titles at Echo Valley, Toowoomba on the Anzac long weekend (the weekend after Easter)....not only is it going to be 40 years since Mister Motocross was at Echo Valley but it will be 20 years since QVMX was started up and along with the Conondale Classic in August these will be the 2 biggest VMX race events going on next year...in fact QLD will be the place to be next year  ;)...for more reasons than one. I hope you can put these 2 meetings on your bucket list.....at Toowoomba we can play 2 up on Friday afternoon and race VMX Saturday and Sunday....doesn't get any better than that. We'll have quite a few guns at both meetings and I know for a fact there will be guy's racing Echo Valley that raced it in 1974!!!!....book your holidays or better still, move up here for the year.

No John it will be 40 years since the first Mountain Man MX, which was run by the Toowoomba Motorcycle Club at Echo Valley. Rounds of Mr Motocross were not run in Queensland until about 1977 and then they were run at Tivoli. There were rounds of Mr MX at Echo Valley but that was in about 1982. The Australian MX Champs were also run at Echo Valley that year. Mountain Man MX and Mr MX will both be 40 years old next year.

As for running the same format as Mr MX for Vintage racing, please remember the bikes and riders are a lot older now. Although I think 4 back to back 1 lap races would suit me fine.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Been a member for some time but never got involved. Recently I have been sorting out 1000s of negatives I have accrued over 40 yrs of taking MX photos and thought I better let others enjoy them. So today did I put up on my OzVMX page some photos I took back in 1974 when I attended the first Mr Mx final at Amaroo Park? Many of the riders I do not know so I am hoping some can identify them for me. Already Dave Alsop has helped me but if someone has programs from the 1974 and 75 Mr MX rounds I would love a p/copy of them so I can identify the riders. I do have most programs of races held in NSW between 1976 and 1977 before I moved to West Oz in 78.
Any way enjoy the memories
Cheers  Peter
Don't ask me how to ride a bike or change a gear. I have sat on a couple but never ridden one. My adrenalin rush came from taking photos of the guys/gals racing them up close and personal.

Check your facts gents, Mountain Man Motocross was first held in May 1975, not 1974.

A few years ago Kevvy was talking to Geoff Udy and me at Echo Valley and he mentioned that the first Mountain Man was 1974, I corrected him then. Kevvy quickly said I bet you $100 it was in 1974. Udy said too Kevvy not to take me on due to me being a Life Member and historian of the Toowoomba Motorcycle Club, and he would be losing his money. To support my claim I also rode at the first Mountain Man event, plus I have the first program. He wouldn't believe me and I didn't get my $100. Now Kevvy, ,the first Mountain Man was held on the 25th of May 1975, the first winner was Gary Flood from Victoria. Now can I collect my $100.00??  :D :D :D :D

Dave, we, that is the Toowoomba Motorcycle Club, the club that built the MX track at Echo Valley, are no longer involved with Echo Valley. The Toowoomba Motocross Club now run events there, and we are totally separate Clubs. The Toowoomba MX Club morphed from the old Toowoomba Junior MX Club and took over Echo Valley from the Toowoomba Auto Club who own the complex, or used to a number of years ago. Being a ex serviceman (Army) I may not be too bright come your Anzac weekend event. I think you can guess as too why.   8) 8) That said you can contact me at any time on 07 46356354, I'll be more than happy to talk to you. Kevvy, you can also phone me to arrange a funds transfer  :D :D
