MX125A cases - what colour?
« on: May 29, 2008, 08:54:39 pm »
Black or raw aluminium?

I know the engine side covers are black, but can't seem to find a decent photo of the cases themselves.

i guess it was obvious that i'd reply here,
they're really orange, but everyone seems to paint them black.
i've got 2 mx's, and 'A' and a 'B' and both centre cases are black same as the 'C'
 ;D

So does it mean anything if my bike has unpainted cases?
Despite obviously suffering some serious abuse, its a low mileage, unmolested bike (still on the first oversize, for example).

does it mean anything?
it means you have unpainted cases i'd reckon.
i've never dived into the politically correct side of things as far as a perfect resto goes and very much doubt i will. i reckon clear coated centre cases with the black covers looks pretty trick but thats my personal preference. but what you've got to do with that first oversize barrel is to wrap it up in bubble wrap and mail it straight up to vandy in brisbane. thats the first thing i'd be looking at doing.
this bike, is that the one from ebay a week or so ago with the big tank?

edit

i just remebered, my 125a is a non-matching engine number and given the "A" model had silver hubs, it's possible it had silver centre cases.
my "B" model is a matching number bike and also has black centre cases with black hubs being standard for the "B"
are we confused yet?

Could be a rare OW MX125a Nathan,

Only kidding they should be black as I have had a few and they all have been black.

MX125a, MX125b and YZ125a which are all very simalar bikes.

Dt125a have unpainted cases though.

Black it is then. :) Thanks gents.

Not the Ebay bike. This one has been sitting in a paddock near Braidwood for many years - and had a badly rusted frame and a gearbox full of water to show for it... I think I'll be able to salvage all of the motor and box, but am not yet sure how to tackle the frame (major repair sections, minor repair sections, or repairing the existing tubing). Interestingly, the frame is rusted underneath the seat, but is fine under the engine?!

The upper triple clamp has gone to God, and the fuel tank probably should too - but I've got the bloody-mindedness on WRT the tank, so if it end up in the bin, then it won't be for lack of trying...

Alloy LHS side cover too, which I didn't know existed.

Cost me $100 which sounds cheap, but it probably wasn't really worth any more than that.

if the frame rails are that shot and the bike is in poor condition it may be easier to use an early DT frame and just swap over the neccesary brackets as the frame rails on my DT125c and both MX a&b are identical.
have fun with the swingarm pivot.

Vandy, I also got a DT175A wreck at the same time.
Trouble is, it's a matching numbers bike and I don't want to completely molest it...

Current line of thinking is to do a proper resto on the MX, keep the DT125 race bike, and build the DT175 into a pre-75 250 racer (I have a late DT175 twin shock that I was planning to use, but it's also a matching-numbers bike that shouldn't be hacked up..).

Quicky, yes, I know. Having some technological issue ATM, but I'll try.
