CR250 RG (86) Rear Rim advice wanted please

Hi Guys

I have a mate who is restoring an 86 CR250 and is wanting to put some new rims on her.

He's wanting black, but is having issues finding one that will suite the drum brake?

Any ideas from previous restos, and a supplier would be handy.

Had Yamaha drum wheels done before, but custom spokes need to be made.
Not sure where your at, but Ash's spoked wheels in Albion, Brisneyland can do 'em no probs.

Wheel builders like Ash's and John Titman in Brisbane just drill the rim to suit the hub, simple. There's hundreds of drum brake bikes out there with new black rims.

I can only comment on John Titman Racing rims. Ordered front rim and spoke set for my 79 RM 125. Now. Rim is not custom drilled. Just a modified stock SM Pro rim that fits let say 2013 suzuki RMZ or any other disk brake rim  application. Holes in rim are modified by JTR to suit drum brake spoke angle. Next thing was spoke set. Correct stock length 8ga straight spoke and 8g nipples. Good quality with only problem being that they arent long enough since the new SM pro rim is not as deep as a stock Suzuki and also slightly thicker. So when i built the wheel there were 2-3 threads sticking out of the almost every nipple.  27 out of 36 spokes . Called JTR with no luck and no response to my e-mail either. The wheel is holding ok so far as i only ride for fun, no big jumps etc. I would not buy another "custom"made  rim from JTR.  The only place i could find to make truly custom drilled rims is Buchanans in the US. They will get blank dimpled or non dimpled rim and will drill it to suit your hub. Correct angle ,hole diameter etc.

For what it's worth I just laced up a set of new SM Pro rims and new spokes from John Titman to my 79 KX250. The spokes were correct length and rims re drilled at the correct angle, all good with no problems.

Great idea Lord Slakewell, and that's what i would do, but tragically the old rims are rooted :'(

I have done several sets of wheel on my Honda's, I powder coated the hubs matt black (satin gives a little sheen to it where as matt has no sheen), if you need rims I use KSR Wheels (google KSR Wheels) in the states half the price of any in Australia. Keith knows all about the vintage wheels and can give you the correct spokes to suit your bike.

The last set I did for my 84 500 cost me (bear in mind I do my own powder coating) under 500.00 using SM Pro rims. A good powder coater should not charge more than 50.00 per hub to bead blast and powder coat.

As for powder coating old rims I have done this as well, it will chip after a few seasons but is by far the cheapest option.

I have sent Keith an email to see what he can do..
In the last week i have chased around locally ( well in Australia ) and the best deal was with Ash's wheels,

They said if i send up my hubs, they would supply gold rims, spoke sets and lace them up and ship them back to Melbourne for $800 not bad i thought...

I have had some local stuff from Ash and they do a good job. if you are able to lace rims then Keith will be the man if not the Ash's option may be the way to go. As John said Titman's is also good.

A good set of wheels sets any bike off, it is one of the biggest cost but worth it in the long run.

I have no clue regarding lacing wheels mate, but can get it done for about $90-$100 per wheel, which seems to be the going rate...
