I really enjoyed racing there. Great layout, technical as well as fast and pretty safe too.....although the rubber band start claimed a few victims!

I reckon the Mt Shadwell track is one of the best old school natural terrain motocross tracks I've ever been to. It's a pity it's lost to the sport.    (Shit it got cold there though...the winter wind blowing off Bass Strait was positively Antarctic :o.)

A meeting at the old volcano* Mt Shadwell Mortlake in Victoria. My 754 sidecar would be a starter even if it is me on it. Of course I would have to find some ballast  oops a passenger (to scare the shit out of) for the day.!!! :) Perhaps Firko!!!! ;) Tim754

* Yes the track really is situated in the crater of an extinct volcano!

Dave - yes I did take that video. The quality was not very good in the first place but lost even more on the transfer to digital. Still, I suppose it is better than nothing. Your events at Mortlake where some of the best run events I have been too and the amount of spectators present was impressive. The tracks were always a blast to ride on but s&*t those volcanic rocks hurt when they hit!

These Photos where taken by RH.

Hey Dave! You sure it 93? I thought i went to the first one in 94 and did every meet there including the last which was a state title. What a blast they were. Pre'80 was pretty new with only expert and novice classes which made the starting grid three rows deep!!! It was after that the Drake told pre80 to F-off which was the start of viper. Ahh the memories!

Looks like a great track Dave, how does the club get access to ride it again, I'd love to help just to get to ride it.

Dave,
Me thinks it was 1993 - I recall ripping the place up on me YZ360A... even won a  few moto's on it if I recall correct.
Got a phone call from Peter Clark about two weeks after the event asking me if I would sell the bike to him!
He brought the bike from me and then latter on took out an Aussie title or two on it.......  8)

Regards
Rob.

I remember all those Mortlake meetings , fantastic place ....the only place I had my old 408cc CZ  really tapped  out in top with 15/52 gearing ..it ripped past Craig Jordan on Garry Bens yz 360 ...I was  a mere passenger ...propper slippy off cambers ...fun days !

Tim,
The meeting you are talking about must be about 1995 as that is when Garry Benn returned home from Europe.
That YZ360A of his was once owned by Rodger Harvey from the UK... Rodger finished 3rd in the British championships in 1973 on that bike and is now owned my a good mate of mine.
Your CZ must have quick... do you own it?

Regards
Rob.

Mortlake was the best, I have great memories and I am sure a lot of riders and spectatulor do too. Mortlake track would have been ideal place to run a Australian vintage mx Title at, the track could have been made longer if it required. it was a top gear track, and it was good to see big bores bikes open up, full noise.

Oh the memories, are flooding back thick and fast!!!

I still have my sash from my 2nd place in the junior 125 class, on an XR75 might i add ;) ;) ;)

The 30 laps i did on the Saturday might have helped a little ;D ;D ;D ;D

I remember the pre 80 class, 40 riders on the grid!!!

As for the cover, i think it was a reprint of the original for back on the 70's?? but i could be mistaken!
Cheers

Nada, I think it was Jason McGuiness but not sure as I used to have three young guys share that little KX. Jason was pretty quick though.
