'87 CR250.
'88 KX250.
The Suzuki boys all rave about the '88 RM250, but they're properly rare.
The 88/89 CR would be good if you can get the forks right.

the 88 cr 250 forks would be good straight up being conventional.

SO does the 87 cr suffer from water pump housing corrosion issues like the 83 etc...

Yep. I believe there's a later aluminium clutch cover that fits, unlike the '84s.

Honda messed up the 88 CR250/500 forks. They were a step behind the 87 forks, although I'm not sure if the solution is as easy as springs and valving, or not.
There was also criticism of the rear suspension. Probably because that was the start of Honda's idiocy of super-soft springs and too stiff compression valving.

Water pump, only true for 500's, 250's went to ali in '92 but also used a different PV set up.

So EVO550, you are saying that the 87 250 still had bad water pump housing material. but from 92 was all OK? See i am buying a pre 90 very soon for Dirt track, as my 83 left foot kicker kills me? and i want disc brake too.

1985 KX Range had preload adjusters on the forks and Ride height adjustment on the Rear Upright linkage as well as previous mentioned items on this thread, they had a lot of features from previous works Bikes and were a true works replica as such.
They worked very well and were ahead of their competetion.

Most of the Euro bikes were "Works Replicas" from the previous year (Minus hand built pipes and all the titanium)

Having both an 85 cr500 and an 86 kx500, when comparing both I prefer the cr with no power valve, drum brake rear etc.
But again when there is no comparison such as yesterday I was comfortable on the kx and had a good days racing. It did everything well. It sure is a pretty thing.
