Final Round, State MX Titles,
Gillman SA, September
its been a little idea in the back of my head for the last few years, but it now looks like we can pull it off guys.
The response has been amazing, thanks all
Recently, Chris Kelly from Motorcycling SA, was in my workplace and I queried him to the Logistics of conducting a "Spirited Display" of Vintage MX bikes.
I suggested that I would like to assemble a crew of riders teamed with the bikes they were known for riding back in their day.
I have chosen the introduction of the long travel Era of 1979 through to the First Disc Brake so basically pre 1985.
Chris’s response was so positive, it inspired me to continue with this little mission.
He told me if I can get the Riders and Bikes, he will organise the rest.
A bit different from our old friends at the ACU.
He has confirmed that one day licences will be supplied to all participants, and that the Program will have our Class included.
Thank you Chris.
He has required we all wear leathers, otherwise nylon pants are to be ACU stamped and checked for the “Fireproof Tag’, as well as all Jerseys are to have the Official “ACU” stamp.
All numberplates must be square, and riveted over the existing round plate.
No fancy number text is permitted.
A finger insertion protection plate must be fitted to the front sprocket cover.
Just kidding!
If you don’t understand this joke, you weren’t racing in the seventies and early eighties…
So, it is on the 7th of September, 2008
This is Fathers Day.
What a great excuse to tell the family what you want to do on Fathers Day!
We will probably have three races.
They will be three laps each.
I know a few of you are still really fit, and still riding.
Most others haven’t ridden for years, so that is my main concern.
Please consider your current physical state, and adjust your riding speed accordingly.
If anyone gets hurt, I will be really pissed off.
If you get fatigue and/or arm pump, back off and enjoy the moment.
We’re not getting any younger.
It may never happen again.
Please be careful, and don’t take anyone out.
I will assess the Gillman track well prior to the event, and we will divert the track if necessary to make it old school friendly.
Time to get the pushbikes out guys….
So who’s in….
Darryl Willoughy, confirmed. YZ490? Thanks Don Bowey

Ray Robertson, confirmed. YZ250/400? Rider/owner
Tony Cook confirmed CR250 Rider/owner
Andy Haydon, confirmed. TBN
Steve Skilton, confirmed . TBN
Gregg Toyama confirmed TBN
As you can see, I still have a few bikes/owners I have to find.
Your assistance in linking these riders up with an appropriate bike would be appreciated.
Sorry guys, if you have a TBN next to your name, I can not guarantee you are a starter.
We still need to find you a bike, and I am trying my hardest to find you a mount.
I don’t give up easily!
If you know of a bike suitable, please let me know.
I have told Andy Haydon he is restricted to a 125.
He Laughed..
I need an RM125X through E for him. (1981-1984)
Perhaps a similar year CR or YZ.
Steve Skilton.
I remember him racing CR250,s and 450/480,s
I suggested to him a 450 or 480 CR.
He remarked ”What are you trying to do, kill me!”
Greg Toyama and myself worked together in 1981.
The shop was Motorcycle Scene in Pirie Street, Adelaide. I was 16.
He has asked to ride a 125. He was a ”Rocket” on an RM125X(1981)
I need similar to that, or a YZ or CR for him.
There is one rider who will sadly not be available for the event.
Andy Caldecott.
His contribution to South Australian MX History, Australian Safari, Paris-Dakar, and Vintage MX, to me, makes Andy SA's biggest all time Legend.
In tribute to his accomplishments, the Number " 1 " plate will be reserved for him.
As an invitation only event, I am still looking for bikes and riders suitable.
Priority will be given to bikes between 1978 thru to 1984.
Please contact me if you have any suggestions.
It’s all good.
Let’s have some fun.
The Race Rules are simple.
If you see a front wheel, you let them past.
There must be at least a set of handlebars width between you and your competitor at all times.
I will arrange a practice day a few weeks before the event for you to become familiar with your bikes.
