Ohlins shock swap wanted.
« on: May 21, 2008, 11:03:27 pm »
Hi all,
Does anyone want to swap a pair of ITC Husqvarna Ohlins- 430mm eye-to-eye length, for a pair of Ohlins 405mm long ?  I have a Can-Am which is supposed to have 405mm shocks on it and the 430s that are on it are just too long.

My 430mms shocks are in pretty good nick.  Not rebuilt, but they seem to be OK with no apparent leaks etc., and I'd like to swap them for something in similarly useable condition, but shorter. I think these ITC shocks of mine are normally about 460mm long but someone has replaced the long bottom shock eyes that fits onto the Husky swingarm with a shorter version.  But they are still too long for me.

If you want to talk about the idea send an email to me at [email protected] or call me on 0412 169255.

Thanks,

Martin

Martin,

Put some 25mm spacers inside the shocks, above the pistons. That's what OHLINS seem to do themselves.

The Can-Am shocks I stripped here had 50mm spacers inside them. Without the spacers they would have been nearly 500mm long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS tried those springs yet?

The older I get, the faster I was

From experience you'll probably find if you put spacers in ITC shocks they won't have enough travel. They have longer bodies and shorter shaft travel than other ohlins shocks.

Exactly, the only correct way is to cut body and shaft , revalve the shock and (if nessecary ) fit shorter springs with the correct rate . And when you do all that , consider selling your shocks to someone that really wants them and with that money buy purposely built new uptodate shocks.  ;)

what about putting shorter end eyes on them? shortest ohlins eyes are 26mm from the start of the thread to centre of the eyelet. ive got 2 and half sets of remote reservoir 400mm ohlins off of 1980 can am 400 but dont wish to sell at the moment. i am able to provide body/shaft measurements though if you need

Thanks for those thoughts,
I did consider putting spacers inside to limit the travel, but as Maico31 and Walter pointed out, the ITCs have a fairly long body and so adding a spacer will limit the travel by the thickness of the travel which will be a real issue on the Can-Am. Also the ITCs already have the shortest end-eyes on them, and that has got them down to 430mm that they are now.

I guess Walter is right that these ITCs should go to someone who needs the long shocks for their Husky or Honda or whatever.  So................ does anyone want to give me a wad of cash for a set of good nick Ohlins so I can then go to see YSS and get something to go on the Can-Am ?  Unless of course LWC could see his way clear to sending his 400mm shocks to a good home..................

Again, drop me a line if you are interested.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Brent,
I stripped down my 175's forks, and the springs you sent down were identical with the ones in there. IU've had a bit of a play with oil weight and level and they seem to be working pretty well now. I heard through the grapevine that you may be dropping down again for Conondale and I'll give your springs back to you then if that's OK.  If you need them earlier, just let me know and I'll send them back up.

sorry i wont sell any ohlins at the moment as im not sure what i will be needing. i also have a rebuilt set of piggy backs i found but they are in USA still. i suggest look on ebay. the other week i saw pretty good set of piggy backs sell for US $180! and the seller only wanted $37 for international shipping. i did not bid when i saw them at $180 thinking they would go up way high but then i was shocked to see they only went for $180

this is what you probably wanted, but look at the price though

are these any good?

the eyes look like the 46.5's or the 52.5's so you could fit shorter eyes.

Non adjustables like that we sell new from $499.00. And then you will get them with the correct springrate , taylor made damping,
the right stroke , the lenght you want and  the mounting  sizes you need.  ;)
PS And if you need that gold look cannister , you can have that too.

ohlins have adjustable damping inside them, you just have to pull them apart to do it.

i know what your saying but some people just want a period shock that was around back then. Adjustable YSS piggyback shocks were not available back then and i think some people dont like the look of modern shocks on an old bike.
