YZ250K/L shrouds and sidecovers?

I feel like this is a question that I should know the answer to... But I don't...

Is there a source of good quality plastics for either of these bikes?

Guards & tanks aren't an issue - it's the bits down the side that I can't find.

D.C is probably the easiest place to get plastic for the YZ's, although if you search ebay long enough the original plastics show up from time to time.
but the radiator shrouds on the 250K are different to the 250L/N because the 250K fuel tank is a different shape to the L/N.  also the 250K sidecovers are different to the 250L sidecovers because the exhaust exits on the chain side of the K and the brake side on the L&N.

Yeah, I know about the differences - I want to put YZ bodywork onto an IT, so I have the choice between K or L/N stuff.
Availability of bits will make the decision for me.

unless you get a side port exhaust made to exit on the other (brake) side, you'll have to use the YZ K tank/sidecovers on an IT because the exhaust is on the same side. if you use an L/N tank then the fuel tap will be on the exhaust side, you wont be able to use the L/N side covers either due to the exhaust clearance.
the YZ K plastic is available but the YZ K fuel tanks are not available, even from Clarke.

This is probably the only tank that would fit with the least trouble, being Clarkes YZ490 83'. But it is a big tank for a 250.

providing it fits, you may end up wanting the oversize YZ 490 tank for an IT as the YZ250K tank only holds 9 litres. but then you can't use the radiator shrouds, but if you did use the shrouds then you'll definately need a custom exhaust as the IT250K pipe will hit the shroud, have a look at the dog leg the YZ250K exhaust has to clear the radiators & shrouds

How do you find the DG pipe ? Good top-end pull ?

btw - I think that 490 tank was around 14 litres, not to bad I guess.

9 litres would be plenty - Harrow 2013 has the longest Vinduro loop by far - even it was only 55/58km around. I'd prefer the good ergos of a narrower tank.

Could a YZ250J tank & seat be made to fit? Seems like it would solve a lot of potential hassles (no need to buy radiator shrouds, for a start!).

Custom pipe is expected, regardless of which way I jump.

yeah, they should have sold the K with red frames and white shrouds. the DG pipe makes good power everyware, although it can still ' fall in a hole' in midrange if you get caught in too high a gear..  also i've got an oversize YZ490J Clarke tank on my IT250J and it holds 15litres.

the YZ250/490J tank wont fit an IT K or YZ K frame, due to the different shock position the frames are completely different. the J seat wont fit either.

i originally wanted to build a YZ465/490J (3R5X6) powered IT250K to look like the YZ250K ,
so i bought that YZ250K with the idea of fitting the front and rear suspension and all the plastic onto a IT K frame, that way i could use my side port 3R5X6 engine. but after riding the YZ250K, i actually liked it much better than a 490 powered bike.

Hey Nath I have a YZ250J tank and a IT490 frame, tomorrow I can throw a tank and seat pan on to check if you like ? With a little welding though anything can fit.
Or maybe Clarke tanks can do custom fitting of a fuel tap on the opposite side of a IT200 tank done in white ?  Just a thought.

I went out today and had a brief look at the fitment of a 250J tank/seat on the IT490K frame.
I'm not much good at explaining things, so I took some photos of what I saw.























I briefly fit the shock and looks like it clears everything, didn't get a shot of that because the camera went flat.

With "J" sidecovers you would have to do some hacking and welding of new brackets.

And if it were me, I think I would probably cut the IT loop bar off the back of the frame to top off the YZ look.

All in all it looks do-able, but a bit of hacking and welding is needed.
There maybe something I have missed that may catch you out, but not sure. 
Dont want to mislead you Nath into things going wrong.

If you decide to go ahead , hope you post a pic of it.

What holds the front of the tank up? There looks like a bit of a gap above the top frame tube - could it be lowered a bit? Then again, it looks like the YZ tank sits in about the same position it would sit on a YZ.

Yeah theres a bracket on top of the frame which holds a rubber in which the IT490 tank rests on.
The "J" tank wants to be slightly more forward toward the handlebars for it to bolt up with the original frame tank bolt holes.
Therefore I had to rest the "J" tank on top of this bracket, and not behind it, like the 490K tank would be.
If you grind this bracket off the frame and just stick some piece of mouse pad rubber sponge in its place, the tank will sit lower, and should bolt up without any real worries.
If I had the rubber placed on the frame at the rear of the tank, it would appear more level than what the photos show.
And even more level if the top bracket was grind-ed off.

Instead of relocating the tank mounts higher, space the rubber block and saddle loop lower with a block of plastic or rubber and longer screws.

Spacing the mounts inboard to match the existing mounts could be done with off set spacers - sort of an adapter kit if you will.

I did this trick fitting a YZ125J Seat and tank to my YZ250G.

Just my 2 cents before you start with the grinding and the welding, plus you can revert to IT tank if the YZ tank doesnt do it for you.

I can hook you up with a YZ250J Seat if you like, will need a new cover and some ezy out work, but its usable and free.
