Tivoli 1976?
« on: June 30, 2013, 04:16:10 pm »
Does anyone remember what meeting was held at Tivoli that coincided with the official opening of the new ACUQ offices there in 1976?

Probably a National level event..

Thanks,

Tony

Ta, that could be it.

Do you happen to know the dates for the MX titles at Tivoli, Mountain Man, and perhaps Maleny that year?

Was there a Maleny event that year?

That would be the Australian MX Championships.  I got 6th in the 500 Champs.  Trevor Flood won that class on a Maico.  Steve Cramer won the 125 Andrew Bailey 2nd on a Honda.  I think his number was Q9 or something like that.  Graeme Smythe won the Unlimited.  I'm not sure about 250 class.  Mountain Man was always later in the year October.  Up until the 90s the Australian MX Champs was a single meeting rotating between the 6 LCBs.  It was Tivoli 1970, Tivoli 1976, Toowoomba 1982 and Mackay (Gum Valley) 1988, Leisk won all three classes at Gum Valley.

Thanks Kevin, very handy information for me!

I was too young at the time to pay too much attention to when the events were - I just went with Dad and watched the racing while carrying his camera bags around for him...

Trevor Flood won that class on a Maico.

Was it Trevor Flood's Maico that lost the seat in one of the races that day?  He had to finish the race standing up the whole way....

The Maleny meeting was the Queensland 500 MX Championships.  I ended up 3rd on my RM370 A, I've still got the sash somewhere.  Peter Boyle won with Gary Flood on a KTM 2nd.  I had to protest to confirm my 3rd place.  I left the fuel off at the start, of the last race and came around on the 1st lap last.  The lap scorers didn't lap score me for that reason.  I worked my way up to 3rd place at the finish but wasn't given the score.  Luckily the Steward's wife also kept score.  Don Harden was the Steward. I also protested Gary Flood who ran out of fuel.  He got fuel from Bruce Biltoff's bike that was stopped on the side of the track.  ACUQ didn't think that was outside assistance, because Bruce didn't help him remove his tank or refuel his bike. What a load of bullshit. I wish I knew then what I know now. Anyway I brought a KTM 400 at the start of 1977. Great bike won one race on it, but the Maico AW 400 I finished 1977 on was better.

Yeah the KTM was a good bike. The rear suspension was a bit funny though. Although it was called a 400 it was really a 350. It had a powerband like a light switch. The Maico was totally different.

Early KTM's 400 74/75 had the same primary ratio as the 250 which did make them peaky. They were just a overbored 250 hence the 350 capacity. I would have thought that 76/77 different engine to earlier models would have all been the smooth almost electric motors. Can you recall Kevin what year model it was?
Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle

The bike was sold to me as a 1977 model. I was working at Don Newell Motorcycles at the time as a mechanic. I had something break so I had to split the cases, I also found that although it was using 5 gears there was six gears in the cases. The enduro models were 6 speed. The bike broke at a Mr Motocross round at Tivoli. Don let me ride the 250 instead. I scored 2 points in one race I think that was ninth place because they were only scoring to tenth back then.

I have a photo of my bike somewhere. I will have to get a scanner.
