YZ465H cosmetics
« on: June 28, 2013, 07:31:44 pm »
Gday Fellas,

Recently purchased a YZ465, and getting keen to do a bit of VMX in the near future.

This bike obviously suits the EVO class, and would like to know if a YZ250J seat and tank is accepted on this bike for racing ?
The factory bikes back in 81' did resemble the "J", and thought it would be cool to do a Stephen Gall or Broc Glover replica for this period.

Ive had a look at the "Moms" rules, and says something like - not changing major components.
I guess that would mean engine/trans, frame, suspension and hubs ?

I did read a thread a while back on this topic, but it was a mixed outcome.

Thats handy to know, cheers Ted.

BTW - Your 465 looks awsome. Nice work.  8)
I wouldn't mind that Pro-form exhaust, as they are now scarce.
Les at "VMX Unlimited" has 5 or 6 YZ465H on order to be built. Has been waiting for months on end, and doesn't know when they will arrive !!

Riverland, South Oz.
Probably better off in Sydney though, for VMX events. :-\

Seen a pic of your bike floating around on the Forum.

No worries Ted. I'lle keep me eye out for them.
Thanks. :)

Ted, I remembered you started a thread, relating to transmission gear teeth numbers for YZ490J, but couldn't find it to reply.

As you may already know, it looks as though the 490J has the same gears as the 465H, while dropping 1st gear. Making 2nd gear on the 465 now becoming 1st on the 490, and 2nd becomes 3rd and so forth. However 490 gears are a lot beefier and cant be transplanted individually. Looks as though the whole 490J/K transmission guts with selectors has to be implanted as a whole in 465 case.
Not sure if this would affect the 465 power spread ?

cheers.

You are correct. 2nd becomes first, 3rd becomes 2nd and so on. I have it fitted now and it makes the whole thing a lot easier for VMX. My 465 easily pulls these ratios. In reality now all I need is 1st, 2nd and the occasional third. Like you said the gears are much chunkier and the shift forks are much shorter and stronger.
This 465 easily puts out way more power than my KX 500.

Damn, that's awesome Ted.
In reality, the original 1st gear on the 465 is probably somewhat useless.

If my trans starts playing up, I think will transplant the 490 cogs as well. Seems the logical thing to do.
Plus 465 gears are getting very scarce compared to 490.

Glad to hear the 465 runs strong with heftier gear-set.

The only triple jumps he would have been doing are the hop, skip & jump.
