Yamaha YZM 500

While flicking through a US mag with lots of back in the day shots(including a youthful Ediie Lawson lining up for an mx race) was a pic of the Yamaha YZM 500.Was it any good or the overly stiff,top heavy tank it look to be??????

was that the works MX bike with the power valve circa 82' ? they looked the goods back then.

from memory.the yzm500 was campaigned in the 87 and 88 world championships gp.there was only two of them and both were ridden by kurt ljungvist and jacky vimond.never won a world championship but they did turn heads because of there exotica...alloy frame and water cooling...wish there was one sitting in the shed ;D

i am sure there was earlier aircooled models as well as i remember a YZM500 poster in the Yamaha dealer i used to go too !

nice bike :P does anyone know why they dissolved the team at the end of the 88 season..might be because they heard the flying freckle was on his way over to the honda team...but on a more serious note i reckon they couldve used that same bike in the 500 class for the next ten years with only minor changes and probably might have got a title or two...

i'm after pics of that too Ross. i think Geraldo may have had the original YZM500 aircooled promo poster from early eighties. i have done a few web searches but could not find it.

leif persson also rode the yzm watercooled 500
in 1987 it was a beautiful bike
a real holeshot king 8)
there is a yamaha dealer in europe
who have a block of aluminium on
display its a melted down yzm500 water cooled  doh! :'( :'(
they could have kept it and given it to me ;D
these bikes are true works of art all handmade mmmmmmm
even if you did not like yammys
you would like these ;)
i think ther maybe 2 left in the world of the watercoolers :'( :'(
