XR 350 build

Guys, can you help me?

I'm embarking on a project bike to race in the new year in the Heaven 250+ 4 Stroke class.

I found an abandoned but complete '83 XR350 in a famers shed in Dubbo that was just screaming out to be brought back to life.

It's a roughie but it's all there.

Just wondering if you can assist with some details that may assist me.

I want to 'CR' it up a bit so 'original' is gone!


Was the XR 350 based on a 500 frame or a 250 version? Or are they all the same anyway?
What paint code / colour is the mid 80's CR Red frame colour?
Will the frame take 84 CR 250 forks & triple clamp to give me a disc brake?
Are the header pipes and exhaust the same (as they look the same) size diameter / length as an XR250? I'm looking at running an '86 Staintune system off the shelf. They look like they were the same for quite a few years.
Do the CR plastics of the day (83-86) fit with a little persuasion? Is any year better than another?

I'll start a little build thread to keep those who are interested up on my progress.

I couldn't help myself with the XR, those guys / girls in the 4 stroke class look like they are having too much fun.
I did try and go euro after some coaxing from our mate Husaberg Pete but couldn't come up with a likely project base (my KTM 504 is a money pit!!) that was going to be able to get me racing on my shoestring budget.

Tim,

Sorry you couldn't find a Euro solution for the 4 stroking class racing aspirations.  Get in touch with Dan from Heaven. He is racing  both CR's and XR's.

The 350's were the standout XR's in 83 - 84 but class limits confused people and they all went 500. it was a neat bike to ride with greata power and a good mix btw 250 and 500 sizes.

from 86 the rfvc heads went so not sure what the deal with pipes is.

an exhaust man would whip you up a nice custom set pretty quick.

there arnt that many 350's round so keep it as close as possible.

CR front end should drop in but check with an expert as its not often im right and im probably wrong again

A 500 Husky 4t in that pre single shock era were a storm trooper compared to the XR's but they are hard to find for realistic prices

Pretty sure the 83 CR125 Forks and Triples bolt straight in which will give you the Disc front.

Bruce Mansell from HEAVEN NSW club also races a sweet XR250 'MX'ed' up. From memory he also said he fitted a 1983 CR125 swingarm too with a few mods.

He will also be able to steer you in the right direction.

Also - Get yourself an XR100 (around 1990-1992ish model) fuel tank and it will be a lot slimmer.

I am also building an XR (250) for HEAVEN 4 Stroke class... and I agree they look to be having loads of fun !!

That would be 84,first of the disc fronts ;) :)

Guys looking to paint an old XR plastic fuel tank.
Any ideas on what paint to us? I do want it to stick and look the better side of reasonable.

unfortunately the tanks breathe petrol so paint can be an issue.
