We raced each other along the Apollo Bay beach towards wild dog creek from Apollo bay, great fun back in 1973 and 74. on our race bikes.

When i was in the Oakley MCC we used to have Beach Races
down at Venus Bay Vic  we started off the Day with 1/4 mile
sprints on the first bit of hard sand .
when the Tide had gone out far Enought to turn at the end of
      the 1/4 mile straits.
There was all sorts of bikes Road Race / Scramble / Road bikes
and a lot of Side Cars as well.
With no Air Filters if was nothing to see a bike go sailing past
the turns with a stuck Throttle from the salt air and sand..
It was just as much fun getting the the bikes onto and off the
beach in the loose sand it usually took 3 or 4 blokes to man Handle
them up and down the beach..

Made a pipe some years ago for a guy that beach raced in Nth Qld. They seemed to be right into it.

The nearest I got to beach racing was some dune outcrops out the back of Mildura. There was a row of 44’s on one lot, probably used for slalom by the locals.
It was a lot of fun on my DR600, you could really lay it down for a turn just like a 125 on a MX track. The wheels would bit into the sand like it was on rails.

Wasn’t good to stop in it though, it would dig down to its axle while trying to get moving again, slowly it would climb back on top with speed, not unlike a hydrofoil ferry

Use to do it in NZ at Peka Peka beach just north of Wellington back in the 70's, great fun....big road bikes with knobbies on going past you at warp speed is no fun, it just about knocked you off the bike (I had an RM125S)....same thing as far as getting on and off the beach...everyone helped each other and then we all retired back to the Waikanae pub.....argh, the good old days.
QVMX.....Australia's #1 VMX club......leading the way.

Who gives the authority for such as race? I know just the spot with easy access and a fishing club at the entrance. They let the WRC tear up the carpark so digging up a bit of sand shouldn't be a problem :P

Looks very cool and very fun.
Only beach race I've been to was on Sellicks Beach near Adelaide in the late 80's. This was a one-off event to celebrate the beach racing that used to go on there many years before.
Something like 40,000 spectators turned , but they never did it again.......  :(

P.S that's lie. I did actually get to do some laps on Mindl Beach in Darwin.

Damn good fun except the bit about getting lapped by Kevin Schwantz....  ::)
