Yamaha XS 650

I have acquired some 650 twin parts that I have no use for. Looks like 3 cranks, a head, various cogs, gears, maybe cams?? I am not familiar with the internals of these so i dont know what I have -or what its worth. May also be other cases, brake levers,..... who knows? I will assemble it into one place and photograph shortly
Is there any interest in 650 Yamahas here? Items in Newcastle.
Any comments on its value?
Offers of swaps are always good[XT/TT 500 stuff].

Just check as the early (447) motors are revers to the later models. i.e. the rotor is on a taper or vice versa.......?....

thanks for the tip EML,i didn't know about that,it's a later motor, stuck a big block on,so it required rods with the later larger pin sizes ,cheers

Hey there James,

A few quick points to help identify:

XS1 (rare/sought after) crank does not have ring gear cut in to the right hand flywheel
256 (early, including XS1) crank has 15t cam sprocket and '256' on the side of the rods
256 cams have 34t sprocket and I believe the early ones are sought after as they have stronger midrange than others. I have heard of people pressing later 36t sprockets on and using in later engines.

447 (later models) crank has 16t cam sprocket and '447' on the side of the rods
447 cams have 36t sprocket and '447' written on the shaft

As far as I know, all models share the same taper/thread on the stator end of the crank, although some have been modified for custom stators/ignition systems.

Though those motors are sooo old and sluggish......you need to get with the Queenslanders and get a GR Suzuki engine.

Not quite Walter. The OW72 has so many differences from a standard XS that hardly any stock parts are used. The cases are sand cast with extra webbing, the head (designated OU) is a totally different casting featuring a hemispherical combustion chamber in all alloy without the cast iron skull cap and different valve angles. The OW has a US made Webster close ratio transmission, magnesium clutch basket (on some, apparently it gave trouble), knife edged balanced crank with a larger diameter crankpin, billet alloy rods and more differences than similarities to the stocker. The head was developed by Toyota and is reputedly based on the 2000GT design. CDI Ignition is from the YZ250/360 motocrossers.

GD, I've never seen that shot of Kenny on his KR framed TT bike (b&w shot). Notice the front disc brake and Morris magnesium wheels. The airtime shot is an earlier Shell framed TT bike. Eddie Phipps has the ex Eddie Lawson identical bike here in Sydney. They've both would almost certainly have OW72 engines. Note the ''power bomb" pipes being used even back in 1975 (b&w shot)

I reckon so, looking at the crankcase covers. I chucked those couple of pics in as the crankcases are visibly different to the earlier TT bike seen here. Fabulous as he was on a roadracer, Kenny was awesome on any bike on the dirt...
