SRM Speedway bike

Here's the newest addition to Jonesy's speedway bike collection coming from Sweden.
                                                                           
                                                                           
                                                                           

In 1948 Husquarna designed a brand new engine called SRM = Swedish Racing Motor. It was produced in very few numbers. It had up to 500 revs/min. more than the JAP and churned out 3 Hp more. More important it weighed 10 kilos lesser than the JAP. One of these new SRM engines was given for further development to Basse Hveem, who in 1948/49 built the long track bike "Hveem Special".

Out goes the CCM in comes a Husky ;D about time Jonesy saw the light ;)

A really nice bit of early Longtrack kit, Firko, I like the heel change two speed box, obviously not designed for changing back a gear, eh ?

I believe it's actually a speedway bike Foss. Here's the guff on the SRM for the Swedish speakers amongst us. 8)

Firko, the 2 speed box , bum pad, 22 inch rear screams early Longtrack to me and it is state of the art for it's day.
The original photo caption even mentions the " Hveem Special " Longtrack bike.

Speedway or Longtrack,it doesn't matter all that much, what matters is that it's still around AND over here, as I said a lovely bit of kit !!

He won European long track championship twice, last time in 1957. In his career he won the Nordic Championships 13 times (8 long track and 5 speedway), and won 21 Norwegian Championships (11 long track and 10 speedway). In 1947 he was awarded the Oslo newspaper Morgenbladet's Gold medal. Hveem rode for NMK Oslo.

Absolutely, I agree it sure looks to be made for long track Foss but the Hveem Special is a different bike (see Ali's post re the museum bike). I asked Alan again this morning and he maintains that the former owner reckons this particular machine is a speedway bike but he and the rest of us have still  to rediscover its full history.  Where's Benny when we need him? ;D Alan's indicated that the bike is in ready to ride condition and he plans on cutting some laps on it and his newly built Alfin barrelled Hagon JAP speedway bike at the Bonanza and other classic speedway events. He's certainly got some good speedway tackle, our Al.

I think that this bike is not a speedwaybike and not a longtrack bike. In Sweden they have a sort of racing named Backtavling in fact hillclimbing races, this bike is a Backtavlinger.
The engine in this bike bike is a SRM which stands for Svenska Racer Motor. The origins of this engine are Husqvarna and then the engine name  turned into STI, Stockholm Techniska Institut.
The STI was made in 1947 by student of this school. (Nils NISSE Hedlund was a student at this school, he made in 1968 the Hedlund speedway  engine) Engineer Folke Mannerstedt (he designed the Original Husqvarna DT engine) was the man behind this project.
I don't know how many of the STI are made.
As the STI project stopped it was (Professor) Gunnar Hagstrom that took over the project and made a better version of the STI. He gave the engine now the name SRM.
There are 15 engines with 350cc, and 35 with 500cc engine ever made of the SRM. (There are now also brand new copies)
Interesting for the historians, Hagstrom used later parts from the SRM engine and made from these the HRM (Hagstrom Racer Motor) for longtrackracing.

Note also the 2 speed gear box in this bike, it is a CBH (Curt & Bengt Hallberg from Koping in Sweden)

Bloody Beautiful. Thanks for the info Dutch. I thought it was a Longtracker as well but the wheelbase looked a bit short.
Can't wait to see it at the 2014 Bonanza.

I never thought the bike was a long tracker, the wheelbase is too short and there's that lack of rear suspension issue. Here's the Basse Hveem special and some links to other photos. It's a lot different to Alans bike and considering its 1949 vintage, is a pretty slick unit. As much as I respect Benny's knowledge on classic speedway bikes, I don't think the bike is a  Backtavlinger hillclimber either. Why would it have a dropped right side speedway footpeg and no left peg if it was mean't for going uphill?
                                                                   

There was a very good and famous speedway and long track racer and mechanic in Norway from late 1940´s to 1960´s, Leif "Basse" Hveem.

Basse Hveem was European long track champion 1957, I do not know if it was with the SRM or JAP engine.
He took 8 national Long Track titles plus 8 'Nordic LT Championship'  wins (in addition to 9 speedway nationals,) between 1946 and 1957.
