maybe this afternoon it will fire up in anger
This CCM came with a Runtronic ignition so we will see how it goes.

In the world of ”real” engines, the RUNTRONIC  system can bring new life into old machines. Take a vintage racing motorcycle, for instance: what a relief to get rid of the whole complicated and touchy magneto! Where flywheel magnetos are used, they can be replaced by a much lighter impulse generator (a disc with a magnet) plus a RUNTRONIC ignition module. You will get easier starting, better acceleration, more power and much improved reliability. For high speed two-cycle engines, that require reduced advance at the highest speeds, the advance curve can be tailored to a specific engine and a specific application.
If you are building your own SI engines, you will find the RUNTRONIC  system to be an easy-to-use, bolt-on unit, that will breathe sparkling life into your creation.
The Runtronic spark ignition system is provided with an electronic advance and retard circuit for rpm controlled ignition timing. The system generates three sparks in two degrees of crankshaft rotation up to  4000rpm and then single spark thereafter which makes the engine easy to hand start. The engine will not kick-back, since the ignition point is automatically retarded at start.
No mechanical advance and retard device is needed. Total advance and retard range is up to 30 degrees stepless variable.

FIGURE: BASIC COMPONENTS

Technical specification:

Basic design: CDI unit with all electronic parts potted in a block of epoxy

Advance range: Zero degrees (at start) to 35 degrees is standard;
50 degrees with new “flux sensor”.

Operating voltage: 3.6 to 6 V (6 to 24 V can be handled by means of an optional,
built-in voltage converter).

Current consumption: at 5 V input: 12 mA at 0 RPM (stand-by), 120 mA at
5 000 RPM, 225 mA at 10 000 RPM, 350 mA at
20 000 RPM.

Spark rise time: 7 microseconds.

Max spark frequency: Z: 25 000 sparks/min; S: 40 000 sparks/min

Firing voltage: 24 000 V with 5 V input, 28 000 V with 6 V input.

Dimensions: Z: 1.2 X 1.2 X 1.0 ” (30 X 30 X 25 mm)
S: 2.0 X 1.4 X 1.0 ” (50 X 35 X 25 mm)

Weight of ignition
module, incl. dual-
output coil: Z: 1.4 oz (40 g); S: 2.0 oz (55 g).

Included in basic set is:
Electronic module with dual-output coil
Sensor and trigger magnet
Ignition cable with spark plug boot (for ¼” plugs or for full-size plugs)
Power leads (S-model only)

Unless you use a shielded cable from the printed circuit board / unit to the spark plug cap , or the printed circuit board is fixed to the frame or engine ,"the unit also needs a earth connection" , not shown on the circuit diagram.

No earth from a fibreglass airbox , so a earth wire connect is required.

So, from what I can figure this replaces the standard CD1 ECU and coil. If, for instance I'm using DT400 Yamaha ignition on my Yamaha 360 engine so I presume that I still use the Yamaha stator and rotor but the Runtronic replaces the ECU and coil....have I read it right Pete? If that's the case it's probably a similar setup to what I'm running..... a Rex's Speed Shop ECU that's made specifically to suit early Yamaha CDI units.
I think that any alternative to the over rated and over priced PVL is a good thing. There's a number of good alternatives available out of the UK & Europe but this Runtronic setup seems to be a good unit that's well priced.

Stewart , We may run the CCM at Canowindra this week-end , we will see how it go's when we run it this week. It if run's OK , it will be there.

Thanks Rob.....Pete just rang me to give me the run through on how it works. I like it so I think I'll give it a squirt on my next engine build.......probably the YZ250-A engine in #2 Hindall. Thankfully our Blacktown based race engineer is up to speed on the process ;).
