« on: May 09, 2013, 08:07:01 pm »
I saw the book "A history of Australian speedway"  By Jim Shepherd,Published in 2003 in a bookshop recently in my travels, had a quick flick through,It's half bikes & cars,I dunno how sought after they are, He had $100 on it,It's in great condition,I noticed the original price was $22, but as we know old out of print books(I guess it's no longer available?) can get very exxy, anyway if anybody want's it he said he would post included in the price,I dunno if thats a good price or he's dreamin but I thought someone may be interested  :)

I dunno about the current price, Smed, but I have had that book since it was first published.

In the '60s as a 15 year old wannabe, I haunted the Sydney Showground Speedway every summer Saturday night, I loved the Solos, Sidecars, Speedcars, Supermodifieds, now known as Sprintcars, in fact all of the proper racing machinery, didn't think much of the Tintops, the Sidecars were probably my favourite Division.

I still refer to Jim's book at times and it's a great read, with top photos, for any Speedway tragic, Ohh, yeah. My first date with my wife EA, was, guess where !! Yep, the Showground Skids !!

I didn't know that Jim had passed away, Smed. RIP one of Speedway's best historians.

I've got Jim Shepherds book 'A history of Australian speedway' a good read that, like most low volume motorcycle history books will only increase in value. I too didn't know that Shepherd had died. I well remember him doing commentary on Speedway on I believe, Channel 7 back in the 60's/70's.

I'm probably a bit slow on the uptake but I've just realised that Slidey's left us. I sincerely hope it wasn't the minor kerfuffle he and I had over American flat trackers that drove him away. Anyone know what or why he's taken the plunge? I realise he's pretty active on Facebook but his dirt track knowledge will be missed here.

There is an Obituary for Jim in this months edition of Peter White's Speedway World.
Peter has also published  Edition # 7 of Speedway Memories for those interested.

I recall seeing him on TV talking about his Phantom connection and saying that he had the only known complete collection of Phantom comics in existence. Imagine what that'd be worth 8).
