TS90 Honcho contender ???
« on: May 05, 2008, 08:05:25 am »
here's the story so far  ;)

Picked up the bike from Nathan at CD-5. Got it half running whilst there. It felt spazy and I think it was YZ250 that pointed out the wheels were about 3 feet out of alignment as I rode toward him. Hmmm..never mind, I'll look at it later. It was runner and life was good  ;)

Out of the blue Oldfart had spotted an SL roller abandoned under a tree over in the meadow down by a brook..oh sorry, wrong story..it was under a tree..anyway he found this beaut roller and it was donated and it was a greaty appreciated addition to this mighty cause and life was good.
I bet ya'll getting roolly envious of my little collection by now!  ;)

So I combined the 2 and had this little 99.9% (no sidecovers or ignition key) complete patina rider but alas, I took 1 ride remembering the one itty minor detail I'd long forgotton. It was bent! it was really really bent!! :o Life was not so good!  :(

not to worry  8) turns out 'most' of this bentness was in the spaghetti factory fork tubes. I promptly proceeded to straighten them with the aid of about 10tonnes. No worries mate!  ;) They still have a tiny whoop in them but not noticable to the eye and happy happy joy joy..my wheels now lined up..well..close enough for me +/-10mm ;D Anyway, I decided this patina softcock bike was not the way to go and pulled off all the coloured stuffed and road equipment packing it away for someone else who may wish to restore one day and again, life was good! ;D

so this is what's left..the basis of a nice little project. I'll hunt up a cheapy chinese oilcooler, freshen up the motor with what's affordable, fit knobbies as small as practicle, larger dia. up pipe, big carb, new Uni filter, obligitory TS185 shocks and probably swap the forks/front end. All at a very miniscule cost of course cause I'm a 'tin arse' so Oldfart says :D. 'If' I had a little over a grand to spend I could go all out with a fullhouse Powrol stroker motor..mmm..almost kind of tempting isn't it  :-X

Go for the Doctor, Doc.

The little SL125 is a 'good thing' and goes hard. Worth the effort.

yeah MX250..this is only the SL100 and not the 125 hence it's looking for a TS90 to run against ;) I do have  one of the last model CT125 complete but basketcase (cdi engine model..about 84ish??) lined up as well soon as I get my ass into gear and drive over to pay the $ and collect it.  8)

Doc the ct125 motor bolts in, just reverse the SL100 front engine mounting plates, (you will see what I mean  OK,) But better to find a big bore kit for the SL. The CT motor has the non pre75 type two piece head.  Umm I know a excellent kind handsome compassionate modest bloke that is interested in the road gear too..... ;) And the SL100 is not that much of a slug against the SL125 at all. So your light body weigh would do the trick in a contest. Being as how a lot of us are a larger more mature pear shape ::) Cheers Tim

Congrats of joining the 4 stroke brotherhood Doc, I'll send on details of the secret signs and handshakes later.

By the way as far as big bore kits go I've got an idea. How about adding about 400cc to it? I reckon I've got enough bits laying around to build up another Yam500 motor, with a bit of work it should drop right in there!

Good score

Hey Doc, my sons first vmx bike was an XL100, I ported it out a bit (like everything), to me it feels like no power untill it's screaming beyond 10 000rpm (which they can do all day long). Really sweet handling aint nothing steers like one of these.
I have heard the the trick is to get a CB500/550? piston which you can bore out the barrel to fit, I think you gotta ream the gudgeon hole in the rod out too. This takes it out to 125cc, I have a suspicion that it could be better than the real 125.
My sons bike is a 1977 model...shhh don't tell anyone we sneaked it into pre-75.

Brent, that sounds like a grand plan but alas the frame is twin downtube and I think the big Yam exits stage left  ::) I'll file that idea in the 'Too Much Trouble' folder for future reference' ya never know.."if you build it they will come!'..I think when slotting an XT500 in an SL100 frame the only people whom will be coming are the men in white coats :D

Eno..yup, that's the plan. pre '75 for all of em' ;) If anyone is gonna whine about a piddly little CT125 as being a threat and not legit for the pre '75 class then they must be seriously slow and pride themselves in coming last or the pre'78's desparately need the numbers! :D be different if it there was a class for 125 4 bangers or at titles but I wouldn't bother running it anyway so end of problem. I believe the big block CT125 shares the same 1st and 2nd ratios as the TL125..this will need to be changed also I'd imagine ???
When I worked for Kingo I think 138cc was max overbore. 150 kits with a case open up and resleeve. How I wish I'd grabbed a few kits but I'll go down and pick his brains for anything he may have left. The 500/4 550/4 piston trick I do remember also. And now for something really ignorant. Which models were 4 speed and which were 5 or where they all 5 and I've lead a sheltered life??  :P

Tim, I'd really love to sling the road bits your way but it's such a complete bolt back on affair that I'd kind of like to keep it just incase. Sorry, the muffler is still yours though  ;) a slight rust hole at top under the tailpipe where it connects to the main body but otherwise it's pretty good :)  BTW, the manual you sent on CD, my ancient ol' computer doesn't recognize the file format...will take it over to mums in a sec for a print out which is even betterer ;D

how much trouble could you get into with a 125 4 banger Quicky! :D just take it easy loading on and off the trailer and that's the most dangerous part out of the way ;)

Yes the CB500/4 pistons fit straight into an ...SL125... Read above as you have to do some bloody mods to fit 100. Hey Doc I still hope one day to find a photo of our old SL100/125 lunacy project it was fitted with  a CB500/4 piston, well no it was actually a big bore 600cc kit one... thats not really correct either the frame was fitted with the complete big bore 500/4 engine. I do still have most of the bits to re do that pinnacle of silliness. Unfortunately critical parts (the modified frame!!shit) and all the photos were burnt and destroyed in my shed fire. You can adapt a CT200agi bike top end on the SL cases doing the old ream out the cases bit .I have an SL100 bore here that has been sleeved with a 200 nice job still marked 99cc ;D

you're stoking the fire now Tim. Will have to dig up some old articles and specs. I've seen xr200 4 valve heads fitted and that was many years ago but it'll all come back to the budget constraints..my guess is close to the original list of mods.

Quicky she's a beaut! I just love the look of the SL. I know where there's a complete SL175 for reasonable coinage and it follows along the same lines but it's the SL350 I desire most of all the early Honda's ;) I have no idea what the pipe is from. It really is well made and light and takes out plenty of bark. It's only temp as I want to bend up a sneaky snakey up pipe when time permits and run a much smaller muffler exiting just before the rear shock. I'll keep this setup for a spare  ;)
