Fitting TT500 piston to DR400T
« on: March 21, 2013, 06:04:39 am »
I know there are those on the forum building bored and stroked DR400 engines, my question is a little more simple can I use 89mm Wiseco piston for TT500 in DR400 as oversize, what do I need to know in regard to skirt lengths and relationship between pin position and psiton crown.

The deck height is out by a couple of mm I seem to remember. I looked into it a while ago, found it was not viable and promptly forgot the details [my brain operates on a need to know these days]
Pistons are still available up to 1mm oversize, DR, GN,SP they are all the same and the rings for the SP/DR 500 are identical and the same part number
I've  got a few good old pistons, may well have a +1mm
If you haven't got a decent dealer in your country Crooks Suzuki in the UK are excellent and know  what is available from Suzuki at a touch of a button.

We didn't get the 500. The 400 continued to be sold at a discount till 82 at least in all it's forms. Crooks are brilliant

Hi MXers,
were the DR400 bores known to be hard wearing? Im considering a set of rings and seals kit to reduce mine burning oil but thought I best measure the bore for wear before I go too far as I cant see any oversize ring sets available. Do you blokes know what the chances of the standard set of rings doing the job would be?

The DR500 comes out , first over size 0.50 second over size 1mm thats it they didnt go any other sizes.
so barrell life could be short.
I rebuilt my DR500 and the bore was good wearing like any other four stroke I have.
I raced it for five years and the rings were fine after five years , I am not sure on DR400 pistons sizes on offer but I would think they are the same as the DR500.
you will have to check your bore size if its over the limit you will have to go to the next size piston and rings up (0.50)
If your bore size is still good and the right size then may just need a hone and standard new rings only.

Rings are the same but pistons are not [though the oversizes are are the same dimensions]
Rings are still available from suzuki but not always without the pistons

Hi There,
ive had a look on the popular US sites for bike parts alphasports and partzilla and cant see any oversize pistons or rings still available. Do you chaps know if there are any rings available in oversize from aftermarket suppliers? I saw a Weisco set at 86mm and wondered if that would be possible since I think the bore is 85mm stock presuming the Weisco set are stated in diameter.

Cheers

Alex ... buy the 3504 XC kit  if you only want to do the rings,  it's to suit a 89mm bore max and they are a file fit. ( stock bore should be 88mm  ;) )

SGP  DR 400  .05mm rings are sold as a piston/ ring kit ONLY   ( piston set )
same with 1mm and STD.

I will be on your side of the ditch first week in May, so if you Pm me your address I'll pop in on my way to Waihi Beach and give you a few pointers  :) :)

I got a set of 1mm oversize rings from Hong Kong via ebay. They were for a DR500, same part number.
