Where did you buy your bike/bikes
« on: March 20, 2013, 09:08:58 pm »
Just curious about bike buying trends, ebay, trading post, from another country etc, or any stories good or bad about that barn find or the one that got away.

I will start it off with the bikes currently in my stable as it would take forever to list all the bikes i have owned over the years.

1 from swapmeet 1/2 hour drive
2  from swapmeet  4 hr return trip
1 from a garage sale 1/2 hour away
2 seen sitting around in yards whilst working & subsequently purchased 5 min drive
1 advertised in semi local paper 1/2 hour away
1 offered to a mate who did not want it so passed onto me to buy, 1/2 hour away
2 brought off the same mate after asking if he was ever going to restore them heaps of times & him finally giving in after buying the same model ready to ride, delivered to my door by him
1 referred from the local bike shop,10 min drive
1 advertised in a buy swap & sell type book,4 hr return trip
1 referred from one of my customers that his son had a bike for sale,15 min drive
above are all vmx ;)
1 modern purchased on ebay 5 hr return trip.

My one that got away is still there I believe, the owner is a real son of a gun,it's just lying in the middle of his shed, when I enquired as to it being for sale he said he would let me know,I asked again about a year later & his reply was "I told you I would I would let you f*****g well know" I ain't asking again, surley prick :D

2x 89 rm80 one gumtree one ebay
87 cr 125 gumtree
2002 kx 125 chinese bike shop slacks creek
sl 100 ebay
84 pe 175 trading post
89 rmx 250 trading post
I usually wait until the auction ends and offer a couple of hundred less than the advertised price usually works. Before gumtree started advertising it was good to buy stuff off as it wasn't very popular and used to get some good bargains there.

 I've bought from nearly every website and printed publication accessable! FYI Nathan I have bought plenty of. Bikesales and always done well. only state in the country I haven't bought or sold a bike to is the NT, have been to to SA, NSW, TAS to retrieve bikes multiple times. Have actualyy just returned today from a 1400k round trip to pick up 4 for myself and bring back three for other forum members, I quit a 75k+ p/a job + extras to do this and i love it!! Yeah sure in the long run I'll have taken a small pay cut p/a for it but does that really matter when every day is saturday and ya look forward to what each may bring..I think not  ;

In the shed now:
1. Ebay auction.
2. Local internet classifieds.
3. Dealer (new bike).
4. Swap meet.
5. Gumtree.
6. Ebay Buy It Now/Classified ad.
7. Word of mouth/mate.
8. These forums.
9. The old printed Trading Post (I've owned that one for a while...).

Never managed to buy a bike off bikepoint/bikesales (or car from carpoint/sales, for that matter).
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

eBay, Marks Swapmeet, vft.org, garage sale (1), this forum (3) and friends.
I can't remember which of my import bikes came off eBay, Marks Swapmeet or vft, they're all jumbled under one whole category...that they came from the USA or UK. The only bike I currently own that I bought from a dealer is my Maico MC350 which I bought from Maico importer Blair Harley when he operated from his home in Putney in 1970.

Most of the above methods, I used to place adds in local rural area's papers buying old farm bikes for cash. Best buy was a YZ 250 A for $400.00 also a two Montesa cappra 125's and also a VB 360. Lots of XL Honda's and a few MT's.
Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle
