XL500R crank case breather

Im wondering if its possible to get rid of the crank case breather setup on my 1982 XL500R, or is it totally necessary ?

I think I can answer this now ... no you (I) cant.
Needs the canister to catch any oil blow back.

You have to have some sort of breather otherwise internal pressures will cause seals to leak .... not good.

Yea, I was thinking of running a hose straight off the crankcase to the airbox, but then I realised the canister is actually there to catch oil.
Only problem is, the overflow pipe off the bottom wasnt plugged so its been sucking shit straight into the carby.

Local bike wreckers or even a car wreckers should have a easy fitted one way valve about Adam. Lift a bonnet and look around the air intake pipes and of course the oil breathing areas. Cheers.

Correct you must have a breather setup. ;)
