Do All PE's Rattle?
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:52:45 pm »
I've never ridden a PE for any length of time before and thought my recently acquired PE250C was a bit rattly in the top end, so I pulled the barrel, measured it up and fitted a new piston kit.
Went for a spin today and it sounds much the same.  ???
Might do a video tomorrow, but had anyone got any thoughts on this?

Maybe I just worry too much.........  ::)

Don't worry about it Tony. All air cooled motors make a fair racket if you listen.
Is it a good thing?

Has it got the rubber blocks between the cylinder fins still Tony?

They are a rattly piece of gear if you ask me but then, so are most air cooled motors.  As a matter of interest what was the piston to bore clearance?

Thanks fellas. It has been a while since I've ridden an aircooled 2 stroke seriously.
I also listened to a few on You tube and they didn't sound any different to mine. I'm confident now that I am just a worry-wart.
My mechanic from when I raced seriously was always having a go at me about that......  ::)

I didn't measure the piston cos it is new, Simo. But the bore measured a max. of 67.030 and the service limit is 67.070, so I figured that was fine.

The best solution might be ear plugs!  :D

I thought all 2 strokes rattled, but what would a 4 stroke man know.
If you've dealt with piston clearence then maybe the rattle is vertical, eg bigend.

Don't try to scare him....it could just be the small end! You want to hear rattles - listen to a big fin Sachs engine 8)

The Stigs right too.

The Stigs right too.

Fixed for you  ;D

I've had acouple of PE's over the years and they all had more rattles than a millionaires baby- boom tish.
You can check the lower engine mounts as the bolt is smaller than the hole in the cases and this can cause excessive vibration- you fit the next size up bolt after drilling the case hole to match etc.

Silence is the worst sound a bike can make.
Just ask Dangerous Dave after his CanAm quite suddenly started making a very loud silent noise at Ballan the other day!

I didn't hear his bike not running?! It must have been all the noise Dave was suddenly making to cover the bikes silence!

The BIG end can make a heck of a noise if it is shot. My PE175N dropped about 12db on the meter after I did the big end.

I doubt that's a problem, Luke.
The previous owner had it all apart and checked it all out an I had quick check when I fitted a fresh piston.
All seems good, so I'm confident that it's nothing out of the ordinary.
Thanks for the input.
