old slides
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:34:51 pm »
This morning I found a box of what I believed to be water damaged slides. After going through them I found this bunch of reasonably intact shots taken during practice at the 1976 Superbowl of Motocross held at the Los Angeles Olympic Stadium....The Colliseum.

Below: the three remaining shots taken at the 1976 500 GP at Carlsbad. The rest are unfortunately beyond saving .

Adolph Weil having a hose down after moto 1

Gerrit Wolsink with Jimmy Weinert close behind.

Every year on Signal Hill, a suburb of Long Beach the Model T Club held a hill climb up the famous hill. It was free to local residents and something like $2 for out of towners to sit on the side of the road and watch the the old T models drag race up the hill. It was always a great pissup and BBQ opportunity. Unfortunately in 1978 the 'public risk' do gooders shut it down to protect us from the 'high powered racecars", most of which couldn't make it up the hill ::).

Here's one for the trivia freaks.....

What year was it that the fastest guys in the heats at the Coliseum had to start from the second row in the main?
So a lot of guys went up into the stands, behind the big pylon things and didn't come back, so they didn't win their heat?

btw I can't remember what year it was either......  ::)

Thanks again Firko.

Old Firko circa 1977....hair, California suntan, fit, groovy sunglasses and weird pirate bird on my shoulder.....ah sweet youth.

Or how about a gun totin' Firko shooting the crap out of old cars in the Mojave desert, circa 1976.....pity about the water damage...I've most probably lost 800-1000 shots...basically the whole 7 years I was in California.

Or Firko and ex in happier times out front of our place in Santa Ana st Belmont Shores circa 1976.

Water skiing at Parker Dam in Arizona, early 1976. That 510cu.in big block Chevy ski boat was the biggest I'd ever skied behind...it was terrifying. He later stuck a blower and fuel injection on it and I opted to stay in the boat. ::)

Great photos Mark, and what a shame you've lost so many. A bloody shame.

This is how 75% of the photos look.....If you can make it out, this is the factory Maico US team bikes at the '76 USGP.

this little gem, circa 1971 is of my mates bikes all loaded up on our drag racing trailer and off for some tomfoolery on bikes.
My RT1 and Lobito must have been on the other trailer. What a great snippet of what Joe Average rode in the early days. I just noticed my old Yamaha DS3 road bike in there so we're probably going to Sussex Inlet and my mates aunties weekender. I was the only one with a road bike so I liked to take it down there...along with my dirt tackle.....great days.

Geezus Firko, are you wearing a pair of Stubbies in that photo?
Hope you got that hernia looked at.
Sausage Singlet, another thing we have in common, spent a lot of time down there, great place.

Cheeky prick....that was pre stubby days. I'm presuming you mean the boat photo so the hernia hadn't kicked in at that stage, the shorts are my classic Maroubra Surf Shoppe red boardies, I cried when they finally wore out. What are you doing looking at my crutch anyway ;D.

That is a great time capsule snap, beautiful

I have been struggling with a design for a fitment of five bikes on my trailer, it all seems so clear now Mr Firko ;) Cheers ;D
