Maico squarie
« on: January 24, 2013, 10:00:54 am »
Although listed as a 400, this bike is the ex Mick Hockley 350 from Sydney, a lot of Sydney blokes will know this bike (note blue 350 class plates as a giveaway). Mick raced it in VMX, classic dirt track and Historic road racing. Believe it or not this bike has won a race at the Eastern Creek road race GP circuit. I had photos of it in road race trim but lost them when Village Photos went down the gurgler. It's probably a bit too much money but it's a lot of bike and a proven pre 70 class and nationals winner. The 350 is a much, much  better engine than the 360 or 400 and comparitively pretty rare being an Australian only model. This bike is 2 engine numbers away from my own 350.

Trust me Paul, that is Mick Hockleys Maico and it is a 350 and not a 360 or 400. I had a lot of photos of the bike, I was going to feature it in ADB but the shots weren't good enough. They're on slide here somewhere. The bloke selling it hasn't a fu*king clue. It's still got Micks number in the same font he always used.

The guy selling it has now changed the ad to say it's a 360. It just happens to be in the next street from my work..

I lost many of my digital photos when Village Photos went down which means that any photos I've posted on here using Village as a host have been lost. Here's the thread where I posted the shots of Hockley's Maico http://ozvmx.com/community/index.php?topic=14764.0 see, reply #5. The description even mentions the bikes #. I've known that bike for well over 20 years so the seller is full of shit.

Actually, talking of the Irishman, I'll try and get him to come to Conondale, he's got some good stories to tell from when he was doing GP's and the like....he's someone who VMX mag should be doing a story on.

It's the same bike the more I look at it......check the pipe, Falcon shocks, the AW model footpegs, the way the front mudguard's been chopped off and a lot of different detail things. There are more things the same than different. The pipe's even an earlier version of the fatty on my bike made by Pete Reynolds. The wide frame/narrow frame thing has me beat....maybe Mick did have another open class squarie?
Mick sold all or most of his Maico stash to Edgar Phipps so it's still a mystery as to how this bike ended up in Bris Vegas, not that it matters that much. I think its pretty obvious it is an ex Mick Hockley bike with the exact same parts as shown on the photos I took that Paul posted (thanks for keeping them Paul). Somewhere along the way some parts/frame/whatever has been changed around. The seller saying it was his mates bike may be correct if his mate bought off Mick or Edgar. I've tried to ring both this morning but no answer...I don't have Micks current mobile #.

Elementary, two completely different bikes ::)

EX Mick Hockley's 350 Squarie, as currently listed on Ebay.
NOTE;
Narrow frame,
Rear decompression valve,
Narrow gap between head and cylinder(as only the 250 and 350 have).

Mick Hockley's 360 Squarie.
NOTE;
Wide frame
Front decompression valve,
Large gap between head and cylinder(as only the 360 and 400 have).

"light weight, and it works great"  :)

You've got it Mick.....I didn't realise Hockley had a 360, he always raced the 350 so it must have been tucked away. He had a lot of Maico stash including a 250 Blizzard he was going to get up for pre 65 but he's sold it all to Fast Eddie and is concentrating on his TZ Yamaha road racers. I'm kicking myself (as Paul probably is too) for not picking up on the decompressor thing, although I did spot the different head/cylinder gap. My bad ;D

It still doesn't answer the mystery of how parts off the 350 ended up on the 360, even the tank is the very same unit.

To quote another thread I am Rolling Around On The Fuggin Floor Laughing My Tits Off.

I wonder how many of us Mick has had fooled all these years :D

So,,,,He may still have an incomplete 360 laying around Firko :o
You watch Paul will be on the phone to him right now, to tell him it's close to worthless and that he will kindly do him a favor and get it out of his way for him ;D
