My old KR Maico has arrived after its journey from Arizona to Long beach and then on to Sydney. I'll probably pick it up early next week. I'll then be able to give an exact, up to the minute cost breakdown. So far it's cost me $200 in petrol money for the seller to take it to Long Beach, a steal considering how far Arizona is from the coast.

Firko, I would greatly appreciate this cost breakdown as I have toyed with the idea of importing a VMX bike from the USA but have been put off by rumours of "hidden charges" couldyou include in your summary the costs for:
*Freight
*Customs clearance fees
*Port handling charges
*Taxes / GST
*Quarantine inspection/cleaning/fumigation fees
*Storage fees per day that the bike is held at the importers facility before being released

Many Thanks
Peter

As a guide my experience approx 18 months ago was

$US2300 for a bike (which through naivety and enthusiasm I paid significant overs for)
$US900 freight (pick up in Arizona, drop off in LA and ship to Oz - I think a fair price)
The customs, import and quarantine charges totalled $1500, which IMO is a blatant grab for cash - a breakdown is as follows;

Excluding gst!!

$65.00 - Delivery order fee
$184.08 - Destination port charges
$62.30 - Destination terminal handling charges
$135.00 - Customs clearance
$150.00 - Quarantine inspection fee
$129.00 - Quarantine Entry fee
$35.00 - Quarantine attendance fee
$175.00 - Quarantine steam cleaning
$45.00 - Destination cargo automation fee
$20.00 - Destination documentation fee
$10.00 - Destination security surcharge
$282.46 - GST on the bike
$70.00 - GST compile users fee?
