The Right Rear Shocks for a 79 CR250R
« on: January 07, 2013, 01:33:35 pm »
Can I get some feedback from forum members on the rear shocks they have fitted to their 78/79 Honda CR250R's.  I currently have a set of progressive units on a recent purchase and thinking of upgrading.  I am an Ohlins lover but wonder whether the piggyback version is right for the bike.
Regards
John

I've had a few 79 CR's and run either piggy back ohlins or fox airs on them, ohlins are a bit better and both are much better than progressive. You have to modify the top frame mount I little for the piggy backs and some silencers interfere with piggy backs also.

I had remote reservoir ohlins on my 79 and 80 models back in the day , couldn't buy piggybacks but Noyce used piggyback ohlins on his 79 RC500 so either style is okay IMO.

I think one of the poms on here (the forum) has had some Ohlin's built specifically for these models, someone will know who.

I moved the silencer back a bit to clear the reservoirs.

The std rear silencer wont allow you to run the piggy back as it will foul the body of the silencer when the shock compresses.
You need to modify the silencer or buy a new one for the job.

John I have given you the info on how to do this ~ a new silencer to do this is about £60 (made by Fresco, but there are other manufacturers who can help with this part, Jemco is another, all the ones I know of have been comissioned by people in the UK to do this job and allow you to fit piggy back shocks)

The Fresco silencer has two types.  1 bolts to the original Honda front pipe and the other to bolt to the replacement Fresco front pipe (which from memory is about £200)

The comment about the top mount is also correct, as the top of the piggy back will bind with the mounting when the shock compresses, to it needs to be releaved to give you clearence.  (most people cut the whole cup off)

Decisions decisions....

Fox airshocks are also an option if you have a look at the latest VMX....

An old DG alloy muffler done the job for me, I trimmed about 60mm off the back end i think,  The top mount got a bit of a mild stretch'n to clear the shock body.

I think the muffler maybe  YZ 465 ish,  looks like the one Tony  (YZ250H) was selling .
